Grant - once you've gotten your responses here on LUSENET - try going < a href="http://mejac.palo-alto.ca.us/leica-users/">HERE and running a search on Jupiter-3, with 'back issues' turned on.

Then stand back - the results will be sort of like the fire hydrant in the AT&T Broadband TV ad. 8^).

Between the two locations you should become a Jupiter expert.

The one I have is a late, black version. it is a good lens, but not an exceptional one. It maybe a Sonnar copy, but it does not compare to the Sonnar original in contrast and color reproduction especially art the wide apertures. Many of the Jupiter 3's I looked at also do not focus perfectly on the Leica cameras-when focused at infinity, the double image does not line up perfectly on a distant object. The Ukranian buyer I got mine from said it is a very comman problem with all the Jupiter lenses. I had to make a very thin "shim" out of alluminum duct tape, and stick it on the cam at the top back of the lens to extend its reach outward by a few thousands of an inch, and now infinity lines up. Accurate focus is critical, especially at close range and f1.5, so it is no small matter that the lenses seem to be slightly off Leica specs-but what do you want for $70.00! I have few shots taken with mine at wide aperture, and if I get around to it, I'll try and post them. I like the look for portraits. My lens has a nice smooth focus feel, and is very compact. The Jupiter 3 is one of the few Jupiter lenses where the aperture does not go rotating around the barrel while you are focusing-a nice feature.
