This is an easy one. Who's Shawnee name was Sheltowee or Big Turtle.

Hint, he died in Missouri.

This is too easy.

I knew it was too easy for you folks. The next one will be harder.

Way to go Cin. Keep in mind that 30 % of the school kids in southern cal had never heard of DB.

"Big Turtle" sounds pretty disrespectful. Were the Shawnee dumping on DB?

Daniel Boone was a man... a BIG man... :)

Peter:

As I read the history, it referred to his short and powerful build. From a people who had a chief whose name translates as "he who cleans up after horses", I doubt that it was a slight. ;o)))

Z: Only joshing, as I'm sure you realized. I am, however, reminded of the following story:

A chief's son was sent away to an Ivy League college. When he went back home for the holidays, he made comments about how some of the tribe's age-old customs needed to be changed. In particular, the way names for newborn infants were chosen.

His father the chief sat him down to explain things. "When your oldest sister was born, I looked out the window and saw a flying dove. So we named her Flying Dove. And your second sister, that is why she is named Running Deer."

"So what is your problem with our tradition, Two-Dogs-Fucking?"

"his short and powerful build"

Then why did Hollywood choose Fess Parker? Can you imagine if they'd chosen someone like Danny DeVito to play that roll? ;)

Harry Truman.

My guess was Harry Truman.

I figured he kinda looked like a turtle with the spectacles and I nudged my imagination to remember him with a hunchback. Justified "Big" in Big Turtle as referencing his political power.

Pretty silly. Good thing I didn't post my guess. Woulda had a negative effect on my reputation as a scholar. :)

Danny was locked into his Louie De Palma gig and hence could not portray "Big Turtle" on the silver screen. Fess Parker was an old crony of Ronald Reagan, needed a payday, the rest, as they say, is history. There was quite a hubub, bub, played out in Variety at the time. Ah yes, I remember it well. ;)
