Crayon off of wall paper?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

As I was making dinner tonight, my youngest of four got ahold of a black crayon (had to be black) and drew all over the wall paper next to her high chair. We are renting and I always care about preserving someone else's home. It isn't ours after all. How can I get it out. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I am so excited, I finally have an answer for somebody! Try blowing your hair dryer on it to melt the wax then washing it immediately with hot soapy water. I hope it works.

Haven't tried this on wallpaper, but it works on paint - use a tiny bit of "Bon Ami" (a scratchless cleanser) and scrub gently with a sponge.

WD 40 will take it off

wd-40 or melting the wax may also stain the wallpaper for good. I'd try using a 3m scotchpad(green potscrubber pads) or similiar first, followed with soap and water. It really depends on what type of wallpaper you have.

If all else fails I would just tell the landlord and offer to wallpaper that room. I'm sure they wouldn't mind and since you will fix it there shouldn't be a problem. Afterall, kids will be kids. I remember when our girls were younger when we were ready to newly paint a room we would let them write all over the walls first just for the fun of it. Probably not the "proper" thing to let children do but they had fun doing it every time !! Good Luck !!

Got the answer! there is a liquid that is sold at craft store made by the crayon company for removeing crayon from all surfaces, and it works! If you have a Joe-ann Fabric store near you they carry it. I would be more then happy to pick you up a bottle and mail it....let me know.

Thank you so much. I think I will start with the crayon remover at the craft store. I will check that out. I wonder if crayola has it on a web sight. Thank you all. I am sure I will find one of these ideas that work.

Before you try removing it yourself, you might want to talk to your landlord first. He might know the best way to clean it, perhaps having dealt with the problem before. Sometimes people inadvertently make what was a small problem into a big problem by using the wrong agent to clean with. Some types of wallpaper (flocked for example) you can't clean, while other types (seem like vinyl) you can just wash off. The landlord may even have some spare wallpaper to patch it with if it is not too old.

Depending upon the age of the wallpaper, however, your landlord may elect to strip it off and paint instead, at least that particular wall. Unfortunately, crayon marks do not come under "usual wear and tear", so hopefully you can work something out between the two of you that doesn't break the bank.

While I was discussing your solutions to my daughter, she said,"Mom, remember when I wrote on the wall downstairs and we used toothpaste to get it off? Why don't you try that." I did and like magic, it came off. The secret I was told is to make sure that it is the paste not the gel. We happen to use Colgate Total. If you looked real close, you could see it. But if you did not know it was there, you would never know. Thank you all.
