Maureen, I have made them with peanut butter or suet. If you use peanut butter, mix corn meal with it. It absorbs the peanut oil so as to not make it a sticky mess for the birds and possible clog their nasal holes in their beak. I use any type of bird seed available. Usually just the type for general feeding.

Just have them smear the premixed peanutbutter on the pine cone. Roll it in the bird seed. Tie a string to the top or bottom of the pine cone so they can hang it up in a tree - and you are done.

hope it helps.

My kids and I love making pine cone bird feeders. We use peanut butter and mixed bird seed. I have to add that it is not as messy if you put the string on the pine cone BEFORE rolling it in the peanut butter.Just keep it out of the way when rolling. I think we may do some this evening.

I used to do this with my first graders when I taught school. Make sure that you bring a bunch of sandwich baggies or something of that nature to put them in for the kids to take them home. Makes a doozy of a mess in a backpack.

We make them at school in the nature club. Instead of string we use pipe cleaners - they're easier to wrap around branches. Wrap the pipe cleaner around the top of the cone first - it gives them something to hang onto while they roll it in the goo.

Smear the peanut butter on the pine cone and roll it around in the seed. You can use storebought wild bird feed or mix up your own (cornmeal, chopped up apples, raisins, crushed cereals, sunflowers, niger seed, crushed peanuts, breadcrumbs, etc). You can also use crunchy peanut butter to start with - the birds love peanuts.
