need help deciding

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Canon EOS FAQ forum : One Thread

hi, I am currently in the process of deciding what camera to buy. I am new to photography and am unsure on what to buy. I have been looking at the Eos 3000 because its cheap but also the Eos 30 because it shoots a little faster and has eye control. But I think sometimes that maybe I should get the 3000 so that I can get some different lenses to help me along. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If you want something cheaper than the 30, get the 300, not the 3000. The 3000 is cripled as far as flash and autofocus and other features are concerned.

But you basic premise is good; get the cheaper camera with more glass.

I agree with Jim's advice. Get the EOS 300 if you can't afford the 30, and spend the difference on the glass. The EOS 300 has depth of field preview and it does E-TTL flash with Canon Speedlites, so it's a notch better specified than the 3000. Plus, the CMOS sensor autofocus on the 300 should be better than on the 3000, and the film- advance is slightly faster (1.5 fps versus 1 fps). Either way, your plan for saving money an the body and putting it towards the lenses is a good one. You can always move up to a better body later when you have greater need and more money.

Don't buy the EOS 3000. This model has been replaced by the 3000N which has now an faster autofocus (still only 3 sensors but you can choose which on to use), E-TTL flash control, program shift and more automatic programs. Now it's a very good camera for someone new to photography but if you can spend a little more money I would go for the EOS 300. This is the camera you will be happy with for a very long time. And your idea to save some money and get some additional lenses is the way to do it.
