Very often, reflexively toying with pulp genre. How to Write A Blackwood Article, Hop Frog, his defense of the crudeness of some his stories by claiming they were not as bad as other pulp(some done by women, horrors!)and were meant as satire. BUT as satire or humor per se, if Poe is selling the story as such, he will beat you over the head with crude devices, joke names. His treatment of horror often slides in hidden critiques of hack devices that he often softpeddles obtusely so it won't spoil the central mood and readers' expectations. How about the affable urbanity of Vincent Price with lots of obscure literary allusions and flaunting of superior style in doing the gothic routine? You didn't mention examples so time has run out for me on this one.
