Over a period of several years, our property managaement company has purchased 3 different scanners with automatic document feeders. We are a small company but we process approximately 250 checks from condominium owners per month, all of which are scanned before deposit.

As you probably know, it's difficult to find a scanner with an automatic document feeder but the good news is that there is at least one good one out there.

The first one we bought was by Hewlett Packard. Unfortunately, the HP scanner would not scan documents as small as checks and the HP scanning software was terrible. The next scanner we bought was a UMAX 2400 which we were quite happy with until we needed to replace a mylar strip which is an integral part of the adf. We have never been able to obtain a replacement strip and have been unable to even get a response from UMAX as to how to obtain the part (even though the manual says the part is replaceable). Actually this scanner is still fully functioning except for the adf (although it is apparently incompatible with some USB connections; also it is incompatible with Windows 2000 NTSF file system but is compatible with Windows 2000 FAT32 file system).

The scanner we have now is an Epson 1640 which we purchased from Dell Computers. It's the best scanner I've ever used; the adf will feed items as small as a check, as large as 8 1/2" x 14" and everything in between. The scanner is faster than any other scanner we've used and has been completely compatible with Windows 2000 and all of our software. I've even used it to scan batches of photographs and they feed with no difficulty. I would recommend the Epson over either the UMAX or the HP.

The prices we've paid for each of these scanner/adf combinations has been around $500 whether the adf was a separate "accessory" or included with the scanner.

I hope this information is helpful to others. I only wish we hadn't had to spend so much money or go through so much frustration to find as good a solution as the Epson has turned out to be.
