greenspun.com : LUSENET : Pontiac GTO : One Thread

Hi all!! Need some help here, I am from Toronto Canada and I am going to be buying a car from a guy in Colorado. I often here the words "clear title" in adds for cars and on ebay and was wondering what exactly does that mean?? Does it mean there are no liens on the car and is there any way to check if the title is clear before purchasing it?? I would hate to get it to the border and have them keep it there!!! Thanks for any help you guys can give!! Leo

Titles

I just bought a car from Ohio but I met the guy in Windsor and we made the deal. From what I know, if the guy has the original title that means that there are no leans on the car. If there was a lean the leanholder would hold the title. Go to the Canada Customs Site and check things out first. You have to make arangements with the US customs also or they will keep the car at the border for 72 hrs. This is to clear the car (theft, etc.). Oh ya, bring money because you have to pay GST at the border and PST when you register it in your name at the DMV. I bypast some of that stuff by having him meet me in Canada. I don't know how acurate my info is 'cause I had to talk to a lot of government people and for some reason there were a few different ideas! I think your best bet is to run the barricades and don't stop unless they shoot out your tires!! ...Just kidding! ERIC.
