FBI: Threat to Western Bridges Was Not Credible

(KFWB) 11.06.01, 2:35p --

The FBI says it has determined intelligence warning terrorists may attack a major Western bridge was not credible.

The agency passed on the warning that terrorists might strike suspension bridges to several Western governors last week, but stressed the information was uncorroborated. Officials now say the threat could not be substantiated after further investigation. They sent an updated message to police nationwide on Tuesday.

"Recipients should be advised that FBI investigation has determined that the threat to suspension bridges is not deemed credible," the message said.

The FBI said officials in Washington, Oregon, Arizona, Nevada, Utah and California received the warning. Governor Gray Davis released the information to the public and ordered National Guard troops to help watch over the Golden Gate, Oakland Bay, Coronado and Vincent Thomas Bridges. Davis said he felt an obligation to alert the public.

This got good publicity for Davis though, didn't it. I think that was the idea--high profile, all the way.
