Anyone use CameraTechs in Seattle?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Leica Photography : One Thread

Hi folks. I'm one of those long-time voyeurs finally writing for the first fime. I'll try to formally introduce myself with some photos at some point, but for now I just have a question.

Two weeks before I leave for a two-week trip to Japan, I discover that my M6 pre-TTL is out of commission. The glue holding the film curtain together is coming apart (the little metal strip at the connection is slipping). I'm sure it will come apart altogether if I continue to use it. So...

1. Anyone had this problem before? Seems unusual to me. 2. I suppose I'll send the baby off to Leica NJ to repair and CLA, but I hate to lose her for 3 to 6 weeks, especially when I have a great opportunity for street shots (in Tokyo).

CameraTechs in Seattle has repaired many non-Leica things for me and they seem to be honest and thorough. The owner of the shop says they work on Leicas and he is apparently a Leica addict himself. On one hand, I'd like to use a local shop where I can hand deliver the camera and maybe get it back in time for my trip. On the other hand, I'm dubious about getting a proper repair job from this shop since I've never seen them come up in any threads about recommended Leica repair places.

Does anyone have any experience with CameraTechs or any other general words of wisdom, advice, or sympathy?

Thanks in advance.

-Glenn

I just had Don Goldberg at DAG repair a IIIc for me that another repair service which was recomended on the LHSA site (won't mention his name) couldn't figure out. He is an extremely nice person and because I needed it quickly had it back to me in less than 2 weeks. His # 608-838-4769. He comes highly recommended from many people here.

Like you, I have never had any leica item repaired by CameraTechs, but they have always been good people to deal with for other repairs. If I needed something Leica fixed in a hurry, I wouldn't feel bad about taking it to them.
