I would suggest Nero as the burning software. You can download a fully functional 30 day trial version. After 30 days the cost is around $50 US. Look here for the tutorial on burning:

http://www.vcdhelper.com/nero.htm

That site has all the info you need to rip a dvd and convert it to vcd.

Hi there,

All you need are three programs: Smart Ripper TMPGenc DVD2AVI 1.76

Rip your movie with Smart Ripper

With DVD2AVI select Open - it will automatically find the DVD movie files - all of them. TO fit a movie on CDR, you will have to do half the movie at a time. Delete the last half of the VOB files and click OK.

Then in the Options Menu (I think) click Start Conversion. This should take about 12-20 minutes. When you are done, you will have a video file (.d2v) and an Audio file (mp3) (usually called AC3....)

With TMPGenc browse for the video file, same for audio until you see them in the dialog box. Go to settings and make sure you have selected Mpeg1 and Video CD l leave your aspect ratio at 1:1 VGA and make sure you have selected the appropriate output ( North America - NTSC, everywhere else PAL) Lower screen resolution to what is acceptable by NTSC or PAL standards (should be able to find this in Nero) NTSC is 352 x 240. If you leave it 704 x 480 it won't look right and may not even play.

I would choose ghost reduction (let TMPGenc find the best method, but you will have to click the box at the lower left (under Advanced tab) until it says Layer 1. Then click Auto Detect. Then go to Deinterlace and choose Even Field. Go back to you main dialog box - ensure that you have selected Mpeg1. Specify your output directory. Make sure the System stream reads Video and Audio - click start (or encode, depending on which version of TMPGenc you have). This will take 6-9 hours. When you are done, you will have an MPEG1 file that Nero can burn onto a CDR with no trouble. Repeat the procedure for the second half of the movie, except when running DVD2AVI, delete the First Half of the VOB files - this will give you your second half of the movie.

This method produces such good Video CDs for me I really don't see a difference between them and the DVD!

For a CD Writer, I suggest a Mitsumi CRT4804E as it allows overburning in case your first movie file is a little longer than 80 min.

You can download a full version of Nero (with key) off of the KaZaa network.
