He wrote long ago for adult readers of a different century. So don't be discouraged about the stories and poems. Fortunately he wanted to create a powerful, simple effect in brief form so most readers can get the main effect pretty well.

Tell-Tale Heart, The Pit and the Pendulum, The Masque of the Red death, The Gold Bug(mystery), The Descent into the Maelstrom and other stories where he doesn't spend too much time discussing tough ideas, philosophy. Poems like El Dorado, The Bells, The Raven, Annabel Lee that contain a sort of story line with powerful effect. Or just surf around Poe online sites like www.eapoe.org. Poe's homor and non-fiction is important so you don't get that crazy idea about Poe himself being a scary madman. But those writings might not be as much fun. "The Man Who was all used up" is darkly humorous.

Well, my favorite short story by Poe, "Hop Frog" is definatly one to look into. It has many great elements and has some rather shocking moments. Poe did write for older readers, but nothing he wrote was REALLY inappropriate for readers 7 and older...
