Tip: How to search this forum (or any site)

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Leica Photography : One Thread

Ok, I love this forum, but there's no way to search it.

So I looked into it. Here's an easy way; go to http://www.google.com/advanced_search, enter your search phrase, then skip down to the Domains area, and enter: greenspun.com. Then hit return, or press "Google Search." Presto! Seach results, and a lessening of double/triple/etc postings!

This search isn't perfect, as it will search everything on the greenspun.com domain, so you might get some results from other forums on the Lusenet, but what the heck, maybe that's a good thing.

BTW for you web geeks, I've tried putting in the address for the Leica forum in the Domain form, and it doesn't work. You can only enter "whatever.com", not "whatever.com/mysite/etc.html" in the form.

And the quickie way to do this right from the google.com homepage is to enter the following in the searchbox (if I'm searching for "skopar" withing greenspun.com): skopar site:greenspun.com

There you go!

Cheers and happy tidings,

Cool! I will try this a few times, and I may put a link to it on the "Ask a Question" page to make it easier. Thanks, David!

There is another way to search a specific site using Google:

type: site::www.greenspun.com leica

and Google will search only www.greenspun.com for leica

I just tried exactly what was described above, and even on an easy one like "Summicron" got the reply: "Your search - summicron site:greenspan.com - did not match any documents". Anybody else care to give it a try?

Andrew,

You typed it in wrong; it's greenSPUN, not greenSPAN, .com. The Alan Greenspan discussion board is somewhere else. :)

yep, I am a better photographer than speller. I still can not get the second suggestion to work (by adding "Leica" to the domain), but just Grennspun.com brings up good search results almost exclusively to this site depending on the topic.

Andrew, if you type this URL into your browser, it will search for the word "Leica" exclusively on the server that holds the LUSENET fora: ht tp://www.google.com/search?q=site%3Ahv.greenspun.com+leica. It's not even necessary to go to google.com.
