Best lenses for Canon EOS 300

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Camera Equipment : One Thread

I'm about to be the proud owner of a Canon EOS300 this Christmas, courtesy of my girlfriend. I have seen it coupled with a 28-80 / 35-70 / 300m Sigma etc...I'm basically planning on shooting outdoor stills, trees etc, with the odd portrait and then on to more arty stuff once i know what I'm doing.

It's my first SLR and I'd appreciate advice on lenses, especially on whether it's worth spending the extra for a powerful zoom.

Please advise if you can !

Thanks

Matt

what do u mean by 'powerful lens'? one advice i can give u is that never buy a lens with high zoom ratio coz image is usually soft towards the tele-end. try sigma lens, they are affordable yet perform well

Try getting the EOS 300 as a body only and adding the Canon 28-105. It will cost more than the cheapy 28-80 that usually comes with the camera but the optical quality, build quality, and zoom range will be higher. The 28-105 will have Canon's better ring-Ultrasonic motor (rather than the economical micro-USM on the 28-80) which allows full- time manual (FTM) focus. The front of the lens doesn't rotate when focusing like it does with the 28-80 (convenient for using filters such as a polarizer). The 28-105 has a separate manual focus ring (rather than one incorporated into the narrow rotating front of the 28-80). Finally, the 28-105 is sharper than the 28-80. Many people who start out with the included 28-80 lens eventually end up dumping it for a better lens, so this will save you the hassle and cost from the start. Stick with the 28-105 lens to begin with, then add the longer lens as your skills and needs progress. And enjoy!
