The REAL Tuesday stumper

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Country Families : One Thread

In that an 11 year old spiked the "practise stumper" posted earlier today, and to be fair to the people who are in later time zones I am going to post another: When television was first becomming popular, movie makers would not allow their movies to be shown for fear of loss of income. This changed by the showing of___________________________ in 19__.

I am still working on it but I found out the first made for tv movie was Roots.

Roots was first shown in January of 1977.

I'm guessing here.... was it The Wizard of Oz in 1956? I'm not sure if that was the first movie or not, but I know tha was the first time The Wizard of Oz was on tv - I checked! I remember watching it as a kid in the early 60's - and always hiding my eyes when Dorothy was inside the tornado and the nasty neighbor was riding by on her bicycle and turned into the witch! SCARY! :-)

Sorry, Mitch, this is WAY before my time! Not that I ever answer any of your trivia correctly anyway!

I'm a bit young for this as well, but I'll go with the wizard of Oz. Have no idea when it first aired, but I remember watching it in 1975, when I was home alone at the age of 9. My family came home in the middle of it, and were very surprised to find me watching it (such things were known to give me nightmares). Or maybe "It's A Wonderful Life". But I can't tell if you're talking about made-for-tv movies, or reruns of theater movies.

I vote for Wizard of Oz but have no idea when that was?

ditto Wizard of Oz..I was in the third grade so it must have been later than 1956 (I was born in 1948). The thing with the monkies scared me to death!!!!!!!!!!! The music didn't help either...you know, when the witches soldiers were marching into the castle...yikes!

Wrong, wrong, wrong! There is nothing in the original post about "made for tv. movies", you let your minds be lead astray by one incorrectly orientated post. The question askes "What was the first (theater type) movie to be shown on T.v. and when was it shown"? The guesses about "Wizard of Oz" is in the right neighborhood and time frame but this monster is bigger than that. Women of America, stop following and learn to lead; 25 years ago you burnt your bras and then stopped; stop looking for a leader and become a leader; be alert: the world needs more "lerts"....

Lead, follow, or get out of the way....

How about King Kong? Can't find a monster much bigger than that! I wouldn't have a clue about the year.

-- Cheryl in KS (cherylmccoy@rocketmail.com), October 30, 2001.

Yes Cheryl and it has become obvious that you have entirely too much free time on your hands!! The year is 1955, and I see you are in control of "one step" connected thinking, wait until we go to three step connected thinking in a few months.

Mitch, the "this monster is bigger than that" and "Women of America" were really easy hints. I am trying hard at this connected thinking business and like them just a little tougher than that.:o)

someone I work with mentioned gone with the wind. I don't know what year though. It was about the same time period as wizard of oz.
