U.S. Official Says Alert 'Likely' Tied to Al Qaeda

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The public warning by the U.S. government of possible new attacks against Americans in the coming week was ``most likely'' linked to the al Qaeda network of the Saudi dissident Osama bin Laden, a U.S. official said on Monday.

The official, who asked not to be identified, said the government had concluded the warning was justified and ``most likely'' was linked to bin Laden, the chief suspect in the Sept. 11 attacks in New York and Washington.

The official spoke shortly after Attorney General John Ashcroft announced the new alert, the second of its kind since the hijack plane attacks that killed some 4,800 people.

Ashcroft said the administration had ``credible'' information of a possible future attack but could not be specific about the type of attack or targets.
