Kissinger named as adviser to Chinese oil producer

By Associated Press, 10/29/2001 04:56

HONG KONG (AP) Former U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger has been named as an adviser to a mainland Chinese oil and gas producer, the company said Monday.

Wei Liucheng, chairman of the China National Offshore Oil Co., said the company chose Kissinger and four other ''advisers with global vision and world-acclaimed track record to spearhead the company, together with our management team.''

Kissinger remains a controversial figure in parts of Asia.

He is credited with helping President Nixon open dialogue with communist China in the early 1970s and he shared the Nobel Peace Prize in 1973 with North Vietnamese negotiator Le Duc Tho for the accord that allowed the United States to withdraw its troops from Vietnam.

But Kissinger also played a key role in planning the heavy U.S. bombing of Cambodia, killing numerous people and stirring chaos in the tiny nation that eventually fell under the control of the barbaric Khmer Rouge regime.
