JORDANIANS GRILL AL QAEDA SUSPECT

By WILLIAM NEUMAN

October 29, 2001 -- Authorities in Jordan have arrested an al Qaeda operative who may have key information about a series of terror attacks, including the suicide strikes on the United States, it was reported today.

The unnamed suspect is believed to have knowledge of the World Trade Center bombing in 1993, the bomb attack on the USS Cole, and a terror meeting in Malaysia attended by two of the Sept. 11 hijackers, Newsweek reported.

Jordanian officials are questioning the man, who was arrested recently, and say they will share any information he gives them, although they have refused to let FBI agents speak with him directly.

An FBI source told the magazine that some suspected al Qaeda associates picked up over the last two months have begun to cooperate with probers.

The magazine also reported on a new lead in the terror money trail.

Hijacker Marwan al-Shehhi bought several flight training videos with a Visa card and had them shipped to a man named Isam Mansour at an address in the United Arab Emirates, Newsweek reported.

Mansour wired $19,500 from a Dubai account to al-Shehhi's Florida bank account last July and August, the FBI said.

Meanwhile, the London Telegraph reported that Scotland Yard wants to question a British citizen who runs a training center for bodyguards in Alabama - believing he may have unwittingly provided training to al Qaeda-linked terrorists.

Mark Yates, 43, runs companies that train bodyguards at facilities in England and in Alabama, the paper reported.

The Telegraph reported that Yates has links to Frank Etim, a British Muslim who was arrested last month by anti-terror police in the U.K.
