Any way to ensure that GICC archives survive online or on CDs?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Grassroots Information Coordination Center (GICC) : One Thread

It would be a shame if the material in GICC were lost. If there is not an easy (or economical way) for it to be securely housed online (in the event something happens here), perhaps it could be stored on CDs and sold.

What about moving the list to yahoo groups?

Setting up a "Yahoo" group is a good idea.

I'll try to archive the contents of this site today.

My experience with Yahoo "archives" is that they are not "searchable" -- you have to page through them one screen at a time. Unless you know something about the capabilities of Yahoo that I don't, in which case, sorry for bothering you! :-)

I've been archiving GICC's contents today, and found that it is at least 150 MB. (WOW)

Where will this archive reside?

ThotT:

Thanks for your postings.

You raise the question: " Where will this archive reside?"

I was hoping that someone might be able to give it a home online, somewhere where it would be searchable.

I am afraid that I do not know of any specific options beyond what has been mentioned on this thread and on the previous threads on GICC at http://hv.greenspun.com/bboard/q-and-a-fetch-msg.tcl?msg_id=006otS and http://hv.greenspun.com/bboard/q-and-a-fetch-msg.tcl?msg_id=006oXF

If a home cannot be found for the archives, then my hope is that someone might be able to make it available on a CD.

Thank you for making a copy. Let us hope a home can be found so that if GICC (greenspun) disappears, the archive will survive.

On October 27, 2001, Martin Thompson established a back up forum on EZ board if "Greenspun goes belly up". He changed the name to Grassroots Current Information Center(GCIC). The URL is as follows:

http://pub33.ezboard.com/bgrassrootscurrentinformationcenter

I don't know if the archive could be made accessible there. Martin Thompson might know.

Thanks again.

I had made a CD back in may and got no nibbles.

Will do another download this week.

How about having it available for free, on-line?

-- ThohT (mensa259@yahoo.com), October 30, 2001.

Perry, thanks for the link. You have some neat stuff there!
