Wartime challenge for thrifty cooks

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Country Families : One Thread

Ok, heres a challange for you. Not that I'm trying to invade Mitch's brainteaser turf! This is just something I read about recently. During World War II there was a lot of rationing going on and people gave up a lot of stuff for the troops. One of the things my Granny told me about was "meatless, Wheatless, sweetless (no sugar)" meals. Now, I'm thinking that such a meal would be healthy, and cheap-No? And I do believe theres a war going on-though hopefully it would be mecifully short. Now, what would you cook under those conditions?

My best meal would be a vegtarian split pea soup-or Veggie chili, with corn bread-(or corn muffins) and baked apples, with cinnimon, and perhaps nuts but no sugar. I have actually made this and it was pretty good, but for this challenge it dosn't have to be something you've actually made-just ideas. I can uasually comeup with something omitting two of the three, but all three is a challenge, given how my family currently eats.

I'm going to pretend it is summer time! and have fried potatoes with onions and peppers, corn on the cob, sliced tomatoes, and a fresh sliced cantaloupe for dessert. To drink I would have home-canned grape juice!

You are making me hungry! Why go meatless, if you grow your own? Just hatch out extra birds for the troops if they want them. I would go out and tackle a homegrown turkey, use some homegrown potatos, beans, and follow up with some of that cantalope. (YUM) Our cantalope grew so good, we had too many this summer and gave some away. Of course, I should have dried them or something. (relatives liked them!)

Hi notnow! (you need a forum name!!!) Have you ever cleaned and frozen the cantaloup in chunks? That is what I do.

Then we make the best drink with them. Buy frozen limeade (sometimes I can catch a generic brand on sale for $.49 a container). The ones I buy say to add 3 cans of water (12 ounce size) but I only add two for this drink.

Anyways add the limeade, 2 cans of water, and about 4 cups of cantaloupe that you have run through a blender or food processor until smooth. Mix well. Pour into tall glasses and freeze until it is slushy. Oh is this good, nice and sour and cold!!!

If you don't want to buy the frozen drink, you can experiment with limes, lime juice and sugar until you like it.

Sorry Kelly!!! to jump in on your thread. I should have started a new one, but just thought of it and I don't want to re-type this!

Kelly, I guess we would eat lots of beans, beans, and more beans and of course since we are in Ky. too, corn bread and tators! I remember my mom and dad talking about how hard it was to get meat during WW2. Dad said there was a black market where you could get it occasionally. I'm afraid Americans today have had it so soft many esp. the younger generation, wouldn't know how to survive if something like this happened again - and it can and probably will. Those of us who grow and raise our own will be better off than most though although I'm sure we will have lots of visitors! I don't mind helping out those hard up especially children but I also think about "the little red hen" and how no one wanted to help her.
