Noctilux and magnified viewfinder

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Leica Photography : One Thread

I am aware of the focus shift peeople discuss in the Noctilux and 75/1.4. But if this has to do with an actual slight shift in the lens focal length- can a higher mag viewfinder help this problem as some people suggest. I am considering a Noctilux, and wanted to get a .58 body eventually- but would it be wise to get a .85 ttl instead? Thanks, Silas

Rather than going to either extreme, why not get the .72. It ought to have enough accuracy for the Noctilux when the magnifier is used, and for the 75mm as well. Yet, unlike the .85, you can still use it with a 28mm, if desired.

Actually, something similar just came up:

I was not aware of any focus shift problems with the 75/1.4. The focus shift in the Noctilux happens when you stop the lens down. The focus plane is still with in the depth of field of the lens but it is not as ideally located. Read the Puts' review for details on this. An 0.58x should focus the Noctilux just fine and you can always add a 1.25 magnifier if you care to. My preference is for the 0.72x finder but that is a matter of personal taste.

Cheers,

Thanks all of you. As for the .72, well that is the M classic the body I am using now. I guess I could just get another .72, but that seemed not to be making as good use of the recently offered variety. I have a feeling I will start using the 35mm 1.4 heavily- as it is my next lens for a while- and is in the much delayed mail. As for the problem with the 75mm 1.4, I am not sure it exists but have seenit mentioned a few places with the Noctilux. Does a higher viewfinder magnification facilitate more accurate focusing?
