it is party time!

We are having a birthday party tonight for our daughter. She's 10. I have 13 little girls coming over for 4 hours of tacos, cake & ice cream, crafts and a movie. What was I thinking? Anyway... What do you all do for your children's birthdays? We don't have a party every year (only for birthday 5, 10, 13 and 16) We didn't want to get caught in the "how can I out-do myself" birthday party mentality. Our son's 10 bd party was a HUGE success. Kids are still talking about it almost 2 years later! It was a G.I.Joe theme. Everyone dressed in military gear, they played war games in the knee deep snow, tons of pizza. We gave each one a canteen to drink from instead of a plastic cup (they got to take it home). The cake was cammo colored (that's coloured for our Canadian friends) with the top resembling a "dog tag". The goody bags were like survival packs. It was so much fun! Like I said, we don't do it every year, so we do it big when we do (quality vs. quantity). My hubby is a bit intimidated by the thought of all these little girls being here. He's going to cut grass so as not to be overwhelmed. I'm hoping tonight's party will be smashing success!

We have had lots of fun parties here for my kids.

Some that come to mind: A water party with all kinds of water games: obstacle course through sprinklers and other obstacles in the yard, sailing a sailboat across a kiddie pool by blowing on it, and a water slide into the mud! They loved that one.

A cowboy party: roping a steer,(my husband made it from horns we had, a sawhorse, some wood, and a saddle blanket), seed spitting contest! horseshoes, and pony rides.

A fall party with pin the nose on the pumpkin, gourd rolling race (crawling and pushing it with your head) and a long hay-ride from our neighbor.

A dinosaur party: a roaring contest and dinosuar egg hunt.

These were all done as cheaply as possible with things we already had on hand.

Other fun games we have played are charades, kickball, water balloons, swimming in the pool.

I always make the cakes and we usually give treat bags with candy, stickers, and pencils. The kids all love these fun times with their friends. We always put on the invitaion: no presents necessary...

My daughter is having a party in November, she will be 15. For this one we are using our gymnasium nad having volleyball, music, Bingo (do fun things like switch seats and other crazy things I think up) and a giant trivia contest. I am still looking for ideas for this party. So I will be reading this with great interest.

What are some of the things ya'll do for halloween/fall festival parties? We are doing ring toss, a bean bag toss, cake walk, and fishing, maybe donut on a string. Melissa, when you do pin the nose on the pumpkin, do you use a real pumpkin or paper?

One of my daughters drew a large pumpkin on a posterboard and we used cut out triangel shaped noses with a piece of tape.

Michaele, Please do have a party! My sister's birthday is on Jan. 2nd. and she always felt left out because her day was never celebrated. Now that we're grown, we do all that we can to make her day a special one.
