Forty Martyrs of England and Wales [commemorated as a group today, though each has his/her own day of memorial] (English and Welsh, priests, religious brothers, lay men and women ... representative of about 300 people known to have suffered and died for the holy Catholic faith, at the hands of their government, between 1535 and 1679 [canonized 1970])

St. Gaudentius of Brescia (Italian, bishop, writer of pastoral letters, d. 410)

St. Hildemarca of Fecamp (French, Benedictine abbess, c. 670)
St. Miniato (Italian, soldier, martyred c. 250)

St. Lupus of Bayeux (French, bishop, 5th century)
Sts. Marcian and Martyrius (Turkish, chorister and subdeacon, martyred by Arians in 351)
Sts. Protus and Januarius (Italian, priest and deacon, martyred by beheading in 303)
St. Tabitha [Dorcas] (Israelite, widow, raised by St. Peter [Acts 9:36-43], 1st century)
Bl. Theodoric of Saint-Herbert (French, Benedictine abbot, d. 1087)
Sts. Theodosius, Lucius, Mark, Peter, and many companions (Roman, soldiers, martyred in 269)

The Forty Martyrs of England and Wales suffered for continuing to profess the Catholic faith following King Henry VIII's promulgation of the Act of Supremacy, which declared that the monarch of England was the head of the Church of England. Most were drawn, hanged, and quartered. They are:
