Does anyone know of a site that has the specific treatments for smallpox? The Army Medical Manual I have is rather vague. Is there any information about what antibiotic to give to prevent secondary infections? Is there any antibiotic that will combat the smallpox itself? The lady epidemiologist they had on the radio station out of Dallas had said that if you contract the North American strain of smallpox, there is a 30% mortality rate. If you contract any of the other forms, there is about a 5% mortality rate. The North American strain is NOT supposed to be the strain that was kept alive, although she said it is so virulent that if there is any tissue left on the bones of a victim, a new culture of it could be started from the body. Hopefully, if we are hit it will be with a weaker strain.

She also said that unless a person who has been vacinated has lived a life of yo-yo dieting, gaining and losing the same 50 pounds over and over, the vacination should still be good, and that children born to a mother who was vacinated will have some immunity, although not as much of course as the person who was actually vacinated. That made me feel some better as I definitely had a "good" vaccination since it made me sick and I ran a high fever for several days when I was vaccinated all those years ago. And since I've been rather consistently fat for most of my life, hopefully my children have some immunity. Still, I'd like to know the treatment. Thanks.

The problem with spreading a communicable disease like small pox is that it has a nasty habit of flying back in the face of those who started it. There are precious few young people on the face of the earth that have had the innoculation. So if you are a terrorist who wants to promote radical Islam, you don't spread a disease that can come back and kill your followers. It's really not good PR to kill your terrorist recruitment pool.

Case in point. The West Nile virus arrived in New York two years ago. It is now found in just about every state of the Union. Pretty good dispersal using birds, wouldn't you say? Why worry about small pox when my chances of contracting Lyme disease or West Nile virus are a million times greater? Heck, there are strains of influenza that are extremely nasty and much easier to come by.

But, to answer your question, Small pox is a known disease with a known cure. Contact any health clinic.

Craig, I read in an old encyclopedia that smallpox can be treated by the use of "methisazone"; however, I've been hearing on the news lately that there is no cure for it, and the only aid is smallpox vaccine for prevention. The vaccine takes "up to" 21 days to take effect, which means we'd need to produce a whole lot of vaccine very soon if we wanted to be able to innoculate a lot of people. I've also heard that the "government" has it all figured out: since they don't have enough vaccine to dose the whole country, they'll just "encircle" any area with an outbreak by giving folks in surrounding areas vaccinations. Right. Like we're going to keep everyone from leaving this area after we learn of the presence of smallpox (assuming NO ONE has already left by the time it's discovered.

I hope you're right about "you don't spread a disease that can come back and kill your followers" But there are two possible problems with this. First, OBL's followers are already talking about "god's will" if they and theirs die. Maybe they'll just say it's god's will if the smallpox spreads to them and theirs.

Second, they may believe that they can keep their own borders airtight until the smallpox epidemic has been snuffed out elsewhere. They would certainly have more success in doing this than we would, as I guess there isn't exactly unrestricted travel into and out of Afghanistan.

I've had my smallpox vaccination. Twice, actually. I was told when I got my second one, in the Coast Guard, that it would protect me for the rest of my life. Now I'm not so sure. Regardless, I would certainly recommend that those who have not been vaccinated strongly consider doing so, if the vaccine is made available. Like my kids/grandkids, nieces, nephews, and anyone else who's too young to have been vaccinated.

I sure would like to know where anyone got the information that smallpox is curable??????? The CDC would more than likely like to hear that as well. Smallpox is a very virulent virus which is highly contagious.BUT...since it only exists in humans, an outbreak is FAIRLY easily contained. The only folks who will have a big problem are the first ones to get it...the CDC would immediately map out an area of approximately three miles in every direction and give all people in that zone the vaccine. Even though some would have already been exposed, the presence of the vaccine helps MOST folks either not fully develop the disease or have a weaker case of it. The bad thing is that folks living in that area have to cooperate with the health department..they cannot go running for the hills and thereby spread the disease. The worst case scenario in my mind would be the scared citizenry, facing armed national guard to keep them in their neighborhood. As far as secondary infections, they are the same as chickenpox, mostly skin bacteria such as staph and strep, easily cured with run of the mill antibiotics. Best thing to do in a smallpox outbreak is to : stay in your own home; allow nobody within 12 feet of you unless they are in a contamination suit and have pills in their hand....relatives from out-of town on the run will have to stay in the garage, wearing masks and eating off paper plates delivered to them with masks and gloves and gowns for minimum of 21 days.

Lesley, smallpox is survivable. Many people of European descent DID survive in the old days. In fact, face shields made of metal mesh were used to protect the face from fireplace heat by people who had survived the smallpox and were using beeswax based makeup to fill in the scars. Both men and women used the makeup, and no one thought any less of them because the scars were so awful. The smallpox may or may not kill you...the secondary infections are more than likely what killed most people. As for the CDC, they've done such a really bang up job on the anthrax cases, we can all just place our faith in them from now on.

As for the encircling an area and giving vaccinations...It has long been rumored that the FEMA plan to deal with ANY real epidemic was to seal off the area and let nature take it's course. Those who lived, lived, and those who died, died. Sounds a lot like the same old plan to me.

OK, I've been gone for about 2 weeks and kind of been living in a cave. Some one help me out here w/ this one. I was under the impression that the only 2 "known" samples of smallpox were in the hands of the CDC and the russian counterpart of the CDC. Is there some credable reason to think that there is more out there somewhere that may be used as a weapon?

Green, I never said that smallpox was always a fatal illness..what I said was that Craig is mistaken in posting that there is a "known cure" for it.....in medicine, a "cure" means literally that,,either by medication or other treatment, one is able to destroy the offending organism or prevent it from replicating. Smallpox is a virus.there are NO cures for viruses, just symptomatic treatment and a few drugs which sometimes are able to slow the reproduction of viral organisms. We can cure anthrax, if presented early, with anitbiotics..there is no medical cure for smallpox. In my own family, my grandmother, her mother and four of her siblings all had smallpox..only the baby died. That was in 1907. The course of any viral illness is determined by many factors: how much virus was the person exposed to; what was the state of their immune system prior to the onset of disease; what is their nutritional status; etc. etc. etc.....

NATURAL ANTIDOTES TO BIOLOGICAL TOXINS

Americans have grown so accustomed to relying upon prescription medications that they will probably have difficulty believing there are natural compounds as close as the kitchen cupboard that are potent antidotes against biological warfare. These natural antibiotics and antioxidants may give unvaccinated people who have been exposed to biological or chemical weapons enough time to secure professional care. They may even save lives.

It is a fact that chaotic events will make it difficult to obtain appropriate treatment even if it were available. So we must learn more about natural antidotes. Furthermore, it is clear that antidotes to biological attacks need to be employed at home or the workplace in an expedient manner. The idea of the masses running to obtain medical care or vaccines at doctor's offices, clinics of hospitals needs to be abandoned if civilian defense against biological weapons is to become a reality.

NATURAL RESCUE REMEDIES

Since anthrax is the most feared toxin it will be addressed first. The Garlic Information Center in Britain indicates that deadly anthrax is most susceptible to garlic. Garlic is a broad-spectrum antibiotic that even blocks toxin production by germs. (Journal Nutrition, March 2001). Before vaccines were developed against polio, garlic was used successfully as a prophylactic. In one test garlic was found to be a more potent antibiotic than penicillin, ampicillin, doxycycline, streptomycin and cephalexin, some of the very same antibiotic drugs used in the treatment of anthrax. Garlic was found to be effective against nine strains of E. coli, Staph and other bugs. (Fitoterapia, Volume 5, 1984) F allicin, the active ingredient in garlic, equals 15 units of penicillin. (Koch and Lawson, Garlic: The Science and Therapeutic Application, 2nd edition, Willimas & Wilkins, Baltimore 1996) Garlic capsules that certify their allicin content are preferred and may provide 5-10 milligrams of allicin, which is equivalent to 75-150 units of penicillin.

The anthrax bacterium's toxicity emanates from its ability to kill microphage cells which are part of the immune system. Studies have shown that sulfur-bearing antioxidants (alpha lipoic acid, N-acetyl cysteine, taurine) and Vitamin C, which elevate levels of glutathione, a natural antioxidant within the body, counters the toxicity produced by anthrax. (Molecular Medicine, November 1994; Immunopharmacology, January 2000; Applied Environmental Microbiology, May 1979) The above sulfur compounds can be obtained from health food stores and taken in doses ranging from 100- 500 mg. Vitamin C should be the buffered alkaline form (mineral ascorbates) rather than the acidic form (ascorbic acid) and should be combined with bioflavonoids which prolong vitamin C's action in the blood circulation. The powdered form of vitamin C is recommended to achieve optimal dosing. A tablespoon of vitamin C powder (about 10,000 mgs) can be added to juice. Good products are Twinlab's Super Ascorbate C powder and Alacer's powdered vitamin C.

Melatonin, a sleep-inducing hormone available at most health food stores, has been shown to help prevent lethal toxins from anthrax exposure. (Cell Biology Toxicology, Volume 16, 2000) It could be taken at bedtime in doses ranging from 5-20 mg. Melatonin boosts glutathione levels during sleep.

Of additional interest, one of the methods by which mustard gas works is its ability to bring about cell death by depleting cell levels of glutathione. (eMedicine Journal, April 9, 2001) So glutathione is also an antidote for mustard gas poisoning.

Virtually all bacteria, viruses and fungi depend upon iron as a growth factor. (Iron & Your Health, T.F. Emery, CRC Press, 11991) Iron- chelating (removing) drugs and antibiotics (Adriamycin, Vancomycin, others) are effective against pathogens. The plague (Yersinia pestis), botulism, smallpox and anthrax could all be potentially treated with non-prescription metal-binding chelators. For example, iron removal retards the growth of the plague. (Medical Hypotheses, January 1980) The biological activity of the botulinum toxin depends upon iron, and metal chelators may be beneficial (Infection Immunology, October 1989, Toxicon, July, 1997).   Phytic acid (IP6), derived as an extract from rice bran, is the most potent natural iron chelator and has strong antibiotic and antioxidant actin. (Free Radical Biology Medicine, Volume 8, 1990; Journal Biological Chemistry, August 25, 1987) IP6 has been found to have similar iron-chelating properties as desferrioxamine, a drug commonly used to kill germs, tumor cells or to remove undesirable minerals from the body. (Biochemistry Journal, September 16, 1993) IP6 rice bran extract (2000-4000 mg) should be taken in between meals with filtered or bottled water only (no juice).

The antibacterial, antiseptic action of plant oils has been described in recent medical literature and may be helpful in fighting biological toxins. (Journal Applied Microbiology, Volume 88, 2000) A potent natural antibiotic, more powerful than many prescription antibiotics, is oil of oregano. One study showed that oregano completely inhibited the growth of 25 germs such as Staphylococcus aureas, Escherichia coli, Yersinia enterocolitica and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. (Journal Food Protection, July 2001) Oregano has been shown to be effective in eradicating intestinal parasites in humans. (Phytotherapy Research, May 2000) Wild oregano, which is quite different than the variety on most kitchen spice racks, has over 50 antibacterial compounds. Just one part wild oregano oil in 4000 dilution sterilizes contaminated water. (London Times, May 8, 2001)

Oregano powder from whole leaf oregano is available as OregamaxT capsules (North American Herb & Spice Co.). A spectacular development in natural antibiotic therapy is the manufacture of oregano powder from 100% pure oregano oil, producing one of the most potent antibiotics known. It has recently become available under the trade name OregacinT (North American Herb & Spice Co.). It costs about $1 per pill, but this is a far cry from the $16 per pill for Vancomycin, known as the most potent prescription antibiotic.

Nature! also provides nerve gas antitoxins. Nerve gas interrupts the normal transmission of nerve impulses by altering levels of acetycholinesterase, the enzyme that degrades the nerve transmitter acetycholine. SUMMARY

The threat of biological warfare is real and concern over preparedness of the civilian population and medical professionals is growing. There is virtually no practical way that vaccines, antibiotics or other treatment can be delivered to a frightened populace in a timely manner during a crisis. The current strategy of having an unprotected citizenry travel to physicians' offices or hospitals to receive prophylactic care or treatment is unfeasible. The public must be armed with preventive or therapeutic agents in their vehicles, homes, and the workplace. Natural antibiotics and antitoxins are well documented in the medical literature, but overlooked by health authorities. These antidotes are readily available for the public to acquire and place in an emergency biological response kit.

As for the smallpox deal, there has been a LOT of information being broadcast here about it. In fact, there has even been some government officials on the airwaves telling us that smallpox is "likely". I live in the general area of Dallas. For several weeks they were busy telling us that we needed to prepare for a bio/chemical attack, including already sealing off an area in the home with tape and plastic so one could beat a hasty retreat into the "safe" room. Then the first part of this week, Mr. Danny Diefenbach of the FBI, and also of Waco fame, came out and said in response to an interview question of what happened to the terrorist attacks we'd all been warned about that there were things we didn't know and NEVER needed to know. "Just rest assured that we're doing our job."

By the way, the Waco courthouse burned up Wednesday night, along with the papers on the little incident at Waco several years ago.

Anyway, like I said, now we are suddenly being told that smallpox will probably be the agent used after anthrax. And I'm much more worried about smallpox.

Just out of curiosity and a firm medical background with an admitted bias towards "modern " medicine, if herbal remedies work against plague, anthrax, smallpox, etc...then why did masses of people die from these diseases over the last thousand years or so. Surely, folks ate garlic before the yuppies came along. There was no AMA to hinder folks from taking those things. I have a collection of medical books which date back to the early 1800s. Not one of them mention any cure at all for these diseases except how to reduce fever. Herbal medicine was quite well thought of in those eras and used prolifically, yet entire villages had their populations decreased at times by more than 60% when smallpox blew through. So I am asking, since herbal medical knowledge was the norm in those days, why didn't it work then but it is supposed to work now?

Maybe today's more highly concentrated herbal extracts will be more effective. Maybe. We also have better access to more herbals than our ancestors. They probably had little or no access to herbals from the Orient, etc.

Well herbs were generally home remedies and they were used sporadically and privately administered. People like Jethro Kloss were very successful with the if they had the knowledge to use them properly. Herbs in those days were used by trial and error. When small pox came in as an epidemic people tried many things I am sure, but it was a trial and error thing. There are records of Garlic curing smallpox. Although as some here have said, many people survived anyway. Also as technology became more advanced it killed fewer and fewer. Also it may have helped the death rate if the Allopaths would have quit bleeding people into buckets. It's amazing anybody lived through that!!!
