in anabell lee and in the raven both of their loves died but in the raven a messanger told him to let her go and in anabell lee he stayed by her cask beneath the sea forever and in the raven the narator went mad

Actually, it was the narrator in Annabelle Lee who went mad, seeing as how anyone with an ounce of sanity would probably not be lying down night after night by the graveside of his dead girlfriend. Both poems are about lost loves. The raven has an element of the supernatural as does Annabelle Lee. In the Raven, some bird from hell arrives suddenly at the home of the departed, apparently to stay, and in Annabelle, a boy (?), obviously driven mad by the untimely death of his young lover, imagines that angels killed her out of jealousy.

Well, annabel lee no one really goes mad. there is deep sadness at the untimely death of a young love, deep sadness. But in the end of the poem the speaker learns to appriciate lee in other things, the moon the stars...her memory. he goes on loving her despite her death. both of these poems were about poes wife who died very yong from TB.

The Raven was written before Virginia died, Anabelle Lee was written afterwards. They can't both be about her death, then.

Chris, You the answers keep getting better. The raven I know nothing about but annibel lee was Poe's late wife, she died two years before poe did himself. She was wisked away swifly, that is right whoever said TB, and her life in the kingdom by the sea refers to life. Almost always in poetry the refernce to the sea, refers to life or the origin of life. Check out any website that discusses his life to find out his bibliography. Most of his poems were either about love, beauty or death. (the works of edger allen poe, author Edwin Markham) Look at your local library too.

Virginia Clemm had a 5 year bout with TB. Poe had seen several women in his life die of TB, so he could imagine what would soon happen, so both are about how he would deal with her death.

this is something that might interest you. i'm interested in oldies music. i know that elvis sang a song called love me tender and that the tune to that song came from a song called aura lee of the civil war era. i talked to a guy that seemed to know what he was talking about and he said that he knew that and he thought the words to aura lee came from a poem written by poe. the e-mail i got from themsays that it was recorde by the norman luboff choir and the words and music are by george r. poulton-w.w. fosdick. i haven't checked into it any further but i'm going to now. hope this is interestibg to you, gary

i love the annabell lee poem. i thought it was really sad b/c it was about poe's life, basically. Poe had already seen 3 or 4 women in his life die from TB & it must have been really heartwrenching to see the girl he loved so much dieing a slow, painful death. every time i read it, i want to cry; it's so sad.
