Hamas member killed in car bomb blast

A man killed in a car bomb explosion in the West Bank town of Nablus has been identified as a senior member of the armed wing of the hardline Palestinian Islamic movement, Hamas.

Officials of Hamas say Israeli agents were responsible.

The Israelis have not claimed responsibility, but according to Israeli security sources, the Hamas member was in charge of recruiting suicide bombers.

Meanwhile, the Palestinian Authority is still trying to apply pressure for an Israeli pullback of its forces in the West Bank.

Israeli troops are now occupying at least six Palestinian towns, but members of Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat's Fatah movement called on the Israeli Army to withdraw its troops from the biblical town of Bethlehem.

Fatah says unless Israel pulls out, Palestinian gunmen will attack the neighbouring settlement of Gilo with mortars and machine gun fire.

Gilo has been a frequent target of assaults by militant Palestinian groups.

Officials from the Fatah movement say the blood of Palestinian martyrs will not be spilt for nothing.
