@#$#$@#%%%^ ISP Tech Support

Sorry I need to rant somewhere.

I normally have DSL, but it is down and I am on dial-up. It took a total of an HOUR on the phone and TWO phone calls to the tech support idiots to tell them that. They kept insisting that just because my DSL modem network lights were red didn't mean that the network was down.. HELLOOOOO what the H*LL else do you think it means! ! ! !

I finally got them to re-set the modem at the modem bank (after arguing with this diz-brain for 30 min) and they said it would take 15-20 min. Ok I waited 25 min and still no DSL. Called back in, got a different diz-brain. His supervisor said to check my settings - I said, NO we weren't going to waste the time - check the modem and see if it came up. Well it didn't and was showing -not responding, but he still wanted to check MY settings. I pointed out the stupidity of that and he says "Yeah, I guess that means the network really is down." DUHHHHH They are supposedly sending it to the network people and it should be back up by tomorrow sometime.

Luckily, I have the office phone number of the network guy locally and I will be calling him first thing if this is not back up. They at least trust that I know what the H*ll I am talking about even if their tech support are idiots (this is farmed out to a company in California - can we say air-heads).

Ok, I feel better now.

This is a common story with DSL. When something goes wrong it can take forever to get it working again. The telephone company just doesn't seem to care that much about the service. Use cable if you can. Avoid DSL unless there is no other high speed choice.

beckie dear, having recently had to adapt to dial up versus adsl, I found that since i had a dial modem already in place all i needed was the number to dial.

After dealing with the bozo on the phone, I finally got the number and all was fine after that, although somewhat slowwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww........

My tech support scorecard:

Starpower, my new ISP: so far, so good. (Starpower is what Erols has become.)

Metricom (former ISP, now defunct): half and half, depending on luck, ie who I got. Half good, half idiotic.

Compaq: Those people can go straight to hell. Do not pass GO.

YEA! ! I have my DSL back. It seems that the modem here and the modem in the Central Office decided not to talk to each other. They replaced both of them to finally make things work.

Gordon, this is the only high speed choice I have unless I go to satellite and I am not ready for that yet. I want to wait until they get better at it having heard both horror stories and wonderful stories.

Peter, I hope I don't have to call Compaq, I just bought a new Compaq portable. If I have too many problems, I will just ship it back.
