Putting "san francisco earthquake" and "1906" into google will get you a lot of viewpoints:

scientific: http://quake.wr.usgs.gov/info/1906/

The Fire Department's 1907 report: http://www.americahurrah.com/USGS/Intro.htm

Museum of the City of San Francico: http://www.sfmuseum.org/1906/06.html -- Pay special attention to Gladys Hansen's contributions to '06 Earthquake research. She found the actual numbers of people who perished in the quake (which info was covered up for various reasons), along with a lot of other really interesting and fresh material. She's a remarkable lady.

And you can still buy a copy of the book "The Earth Shook, The Sky Burned" at Amazon for $16.95. In the meantime, it's discussed here, too: http://www.ibiscom.com/sfeq.htm

For eyewitness accounts by men, women and children written during and shortly after the tragedy read "Three Fearful Days: San Francisco Memoirs of the 1906 Earthquake & Fire" compiled by Malcolm E. Barker (Londonborn Publications, San Francisco, 1998) available at Bay Area bookstores and on Amazon.

I think what happened on that horried day in Sanfransico California was a moment in history that will never be forgotten. In this traggic earthquake so many inocent lives were taken just by mother nature. Just by this earthquake it showed that mother nature not only has it positives but also has its negative.
