Second NJ Postal Worker Has Anthrax

By LORI HINANNT, Associated Press Writer

EWING, N.J. (AP) - A second New Jersey postal worker has the skin form of anthrax, health officials said Friday as the FBI (news - web sites) zeroed in on the state as the potential source of contaminated letters sent to NBC and the Senate majority leader.

The 35-year-old Levittown, Pa., man was in stable condition at a hospital, is taking antibiotics and is expected to recover, Pennsylvania Department of Health spokesman Richard McGarvey said.

``It isn't life threatening in any way,'' McGarvey said.

The man, who was not identified, sorts and loads mail at a regional mail center in Hamilton that handled anthrax-tainted letters sent to NBC anchor Tom Brokaw and Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle in Washington.

A female postal worker who may have handled those letters was diagnosed with skin anthrax earlier this week.

Postal Inspector Tony Esposito said Thursday that officials were ``almost certain'' that a third employee, a maintenance worker who serviced mail-sorting machines at the Hamilton facility, also has anthrax. Tests results are pending.

It's reaching the point now where postal workers should get hazardous duty pay. This problem will likely be around for a long time. There is *tons* of anthrax that has been made by Iraq and others. They can just release it every week or so, month after month, and drive us nuts. But the postal workers will constantly be in harm's way. Darn.
