Guards Search Vehicles At Tulsa Airport

Officers Also Searching Trunks

TULSA, Okla. -- One of the three entrances to Tulsa International Airport's short-term parking lot was closed Thursday morning and every vehicle entering the lot was being inspected.

Airport Director Brent Kitchen said the action is not in response to a threat. Instead, he said that the Federal Aviation Administration rescinded a waiver that exempted all but "large vehicles" from searches.

Armed airport safety officers were visually inspecting the interior of all vehicles, and drivers were also required to open their trunks.

The FAA is also requiring the Tulsa Airport Authority and some of the airport tenants to post 24-hour guards at each of the 38 computer-controlled gates surrounding the airfield.

Officers, passengers, visitors and airport executives said everyone is being patient and cooperative with the additional security.

but if one of those cars had a bomb hidden in it, wouldn't that be overkill when it exploded?

IIRC, they are doing the same at our airports as well, albiet with people who have no idea what they are looking for. Feeling safe now?

I believe the solution at Logan airport in Boston was to prohibit use of one of the parking areas. It made for a real mess immediately after 9/11, because they had to move 2,000 or more cars to an outer lot before the airport could reopen.
