Need help with freezer organization

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Country Families : One Thread

Hello all,

I was just standing on my head digging into the chest freezer for the turkey. I'm only 5' tall and use a little step stool to get what's in the bottom. This chest freezer is pre-civil war, runs constantly and will be junked very soon. There's an upright on it's way! I'd really like some organizational hints for the freezer. I know I'm bad, very bad, but sometimes I forget what's in there and keep telling my self to keep a list. I suppose that's step #1 for organization. Any helpful hints are appreciated.

I just hate chest freezers for this reason! Some say they use milk crates to organize types of meat, veggies etc... into different sections. Good Luck! Glad it is not me having to dig through all that stuff!!!!!!!!

When we went from our chest to our upright, I thought I was in heaven. No more frosty hair and brused ribs!I found those wire baskets at a 2nd hand store and grouped everything. Chicken and Turkey in baskets on the same shelf. Veggies grouped together on certian shelves. On the door I put my baking items, nuts, and popcicles for the kids. I also make up batches of waffels and sausage bisquits for quick meals. I store anything like that in cheap plasic container. Label, label, label.I also keep a list on the outside of the door with what I have. It also helps to can or dry anything that you can so you can have more space. Hope this helps!

haha, Charleen, I'm also about 5'tall, and I feel your pain!;) Really was a challenge back when I was always pregnant:)..I have used big boxes for the different types of meat, which helps a little. One little hint on the uprights, especially if you have children, be sure it always gets closed good. My mom lost quite a bit of meat once because the grandkids(not mine;) got into it for treats and left it ajar..Better yet, don't put the children's treats in there!
