DEAREST , WILT THOU?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Country Families : One Thread

I just thought this would be a really neat topic. My grandma was telling me the other day , how my grandpa purposed near a cemetary. Which i thought was halarious. In asking him, he replied," well yes i asked her wilt thou" and she wilted. Weither or not that humour toots your horn, i don't know. But as a romantic at heart, how were you purposed to?

Still waiting!

i'm only eighteen, can't say i'm waiting (given the idea its GOING to happen), but it'll be neat to see who God has for me!!

Jillian~ Are you familiar with the Christian singer Rebecca St. James? She is about 22 and has been touring and singing since she was 13 or 14. Her whole family tours with her, even though she is past the chaperone stage. Her latest tour is called the "Wait For Me Tour". She has written a song about waiting until marriage for sex and how she prays that the mate God has for her is also praying for her and waiting sexually. She is a beautiful girl and writes all her own music, so is very talented. I really admire her for living what she preaches!

Yes i have heard of her some, i have never heard any of her music. I also respect people who make a stand for something important ( especially as important as that) and stick to it. In this world of "in the moment, and what feels good for now", its impressive when a young person is trying to meet Gods standard. I already pray for the person who i'll marry , that they'll be putting God first, i just hope that i meet the challenge and grow closer to God as well.

Okay, I'll start. Tom was 29, I was 20. We had been dating exactly three weeks. (Yeah, Jilly, I know, but my parents had known him long enough to already consider him a son.) We were sitting on a bridge, and I noticed he was quiet, so I looked at him. I saw him sort of shake his head, so I said, "What are you thinking?" And then right away, I just KNEW. He said, not really looking at me, "I was just thinking it's probably too premature to ask you to marry me." Then he said, all in a rush, "I will love you and care for you and...." He wasn't letting me answer him!!! Finally I was able to say yes. Then came the hard part--he had to ask my dad. Then my grandma cried and said he'd better take good care of me. We were married 5 months and 7 days after our first date, 15 years ago next month.

My husband and I have been married for almost 23 years. It was a second marriage for both of us. I had just about decided marriage wasn't for me when we met. He came to my jobsite as the new boss and the first thing I noticed about him was his incrediblely beautiful blue eyes. Our friends at work all thought we'd be a perfect pair, but because this was a work situation, I wasn't interested. However, we were "set up" at a cookout and really liked each other so we started dating in secret. He would leave notes in my desk drawer asking me to dinner or movies or whatever. Finally, almost a year later, we decided to "come out" together at another work related cookout. I was kinda surprised when no one seemed it least bit surprised that we came together. When I mentioned that to a friend, he said "Dianne, the only two people that DIDN'T know you and Russ were going together were you and Russ!!!

When we got married, all the work people were there (some even were in the wedding party). They even threw us a surprise shower. And, to answer your original question; Russ proposed by leaving me a note in my desk drawer! I left him my response in a note in his desk drawer.

That was almost 23 years ago and we're still leaving notes for each other.

Wishing you enough.

We were in my mother's house and he asked me how many cars I thought we should have. (He is a mechanic.) I looked at him, then he proposed marriage. I excepted. Then he had to ask my father's permission. He was so nervious. We have been married almost 33 years.

You know I really don't remember any one particular moment when he formally asked me to marry him. He bought ma a ring for Christams when I was 16, and later after that one of my future brother-in-laws introduced me as his fiance to a friend of his! So I thought hey, I am his fiance!! the honest truth is the very first time I saw him, I was 14 years old, and I looked at him and thought I could marry this guy!!! I don't think once we started to date we even thought of anyone else. It was just such a natural progression of things, that there really was never any doubt!!

This is my second marriage and I was NOT interested in finding another man. My honey was over 30 and had decided to stop looking and become a bachelor forever. Well, we met and within 4 months we knew that it was perfect. To answer your original question, I was laying on the couch, sick with strep throat and he kneeled next to me with a gold ring featuring our birthstones. I was so sick, I just laid there and cried. We've been married for 8 years. He's still too good to be true.

I had gone to a wedding in Port Huron,MI with some friends of mine. All of the guys in the wedding were in one branch of the service or other, and all had on their dress uniforms. Well, you know how handsome men are in their uniforms. I asked my friend if she knew who the best man was in the Air Force uniform and she said well, yeh, that's my cousin. Really! Well I met him that night, but he had to return to Utah, only 2000 miles away! Anyway, the next year his four years were up and he moved back to Ohio. We had our first date in October, and we were married in February. He proposed in front of the house with big fat snowflakes falling all around. That was 19 years ago. And he still fits in that uniform.

On a beach with a full moon shining. This was in cottage country in Ontario and the ONLY time the beaches are deserted is after 10 at night. We'd decided to take a quiet walk before we headed back to my parents house and right there, in the middle of the beach, he got down on his knees and told me he'd love me forever, and would I marry him?

Of course, the answer was yes. Thirteen years and two kids later, I have absolutely no regrets.

My husband is the ultimate pragmatist! We were in a mall and came across a jewlery store window display. He looked at the wedding rings and said "Well, I guess I ought to get you one of those." We went inside to choose an engagement ring and a wedding ring and I insisted he ask me formally, so...right there in the jewlery store, in front of several strangers, he got down on one knee and proposed...loved every minute of it!

I was working in a home center store in the outside garden dept. selling live Christmas trees, (now just so you know this was a set up, if there ever was one) I am just over 5ft tall, not exactly the size of someone who ought to be selling 8 ft Douglas fir trees, there was no one else in my dept. that day, on normal day there would be 5 to 8 people in that dept. so I am out in the cold, hair in pig tails, wearing coveralls that are 4 sizes too big so I could wear extra clothes under them, no make-up, and an older man asks for a bag of pine branches so he could make a wreath (there was no charge for this as we would just have to carry the trimmings out to the dumpster) I told him no problem he would just need to wait for the next tree, so I could trim the base and thus have the branches he wanted, so he waited while I trimmed, [now try to picture a size 3 female in size 7 coveralls trying to put an 8 ft fir tree on a sawhorse, to trim the base,] ok, the older man was chatting with me and the man buying the tree, and the older man tells us how he is on a road trip and just pulled off the interstate to get some pine branches, he had passed 2 other home centers , one just a mile before were I worked, and there was another a mile after, and he still had several states to go through, the older man asked what the man buying the tree what was he doing for Christmas, he said nothing, his kids would be out of state visiting their mother, then the older man asked me what I would be doing for Christmas I said I had no plans either as my children were not with me, the older man said that we (The man buying the tree and I)should have dinner together, we both laughed, I smarted off and said ok, if you buy the stuff I will cook it, we all laughed, but the older man insisted we should not be alone on Christmas and so we exchanged phone numbers, (my husband later told me that he never would have spoken to me, much less asked me out, becuase I was too pretty) I offered to help the guy with the tree because his thumb was broken, he said no I'm fine and picked the whole tree up over his head with one hand and carried it out,...wow.... The next day, I was late going to lunch because I had the gate key, and someone from the other end of the store had to be in our yard, I could not go until they were done, the man who bought the tree walked up behind me, and called out "Hi, Bible Thumper" I turned around and without a thought said,"Hi, Your just in time to take me to lunch." he laughed and said ok, that he would, I met his boys, and about 2 weeks later we came home from a date, He plopped down in one of my chairs with a funny look on his face, and I knew that I loved him, I began to cry so bad that I was shaking, all over, (you just don't tell someone you've known 2 weeks that your in love with them,) he just sat there asking what was wrong, for me to tell him, all the while he had this look on his face, like the cat that ate the canary, I was out of control, couldn't talk, had to write him a note, that I loved him, he read it, smiled real big and told me that he had prayed to God, that he wanted to know how it was going to be between us THAT NIGHT or he would not see me again. We'll be married 4 years in January. GOD IS GOOD!

p.s. when ever we have had hard times or hard feelings between us we remember how we met, we know God put us together so quiting is not an option.

All the stories i'v read are amazing in their own way, and it IS soo awesome to see how God works, and that if we pray about things and trust it into his care, that he will answer. Another thing is that he answers over and beyond our expectations. Its hard to know when to acknowledge your feelings. I have made so many mistakes and have had premature feelings about a lot of cases, that now i'm backing off from allowing myself to acknowledge any, because i don't want to manufactor any thing that shouldn't be there in GOds timing. I would be asking for trouble otherwise.

My husband and I dated for a year, then moved in together and lived together for 3 years. At the time we moved in together, we had already had several friends get married and divorced and we felt that marriage had no true significance any more so we weren't going to bother. Most people get married until death do us part, or until one of us finds something better, sadly enough. Well, we had been batting the idea of getting married around, so I had my suspicions. On Christmas eve he took me out to dinner, and when we got home I found a poem and a ring on my pillow. I still have the poem and the husband 11 years later. They both tug at my heartstrings still.

The wife says that I never really did ask. I marred her in my mind months before I had the guts to really do it. I took her with me when I dropped my sister off at the dr. Sister asked what we were going to do while we waited, I said go buy a wedding ring, wife looked at me like I was stupid, when we got to the jewler, she looked at me like I was stupid, Had her pick the ring set, same look. When she got home nobody believed her, just laughed. When we went to pick the ring up, I gave it to her and mumbled something about getting married. Romantic ain't I. 9 years and 3 kids later she ain't killed me yet.
