video size distortion

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Video CD : One Thread

whenever i burn vcds, if the resolution of the movie is not proportionate to the tv, it distorts. for example, i burned a widescreen movie onto a vcd, however the movie is distorted to fill up the entire tv screen, instead of leaving it as widescreen. im using nero right now to burn vcds, and i'm not sure how to fix this. any suggestions?

I am assuming you are backingup a DVD. If this is the case what ever software you are using to combine the video and audio streams you need to set top and bottom bands which make the movie the way it looks.

Nice use of the term 'Backing Up a DVD'. Lets face it, you ripped your DVD and now you have a 'cropped' screen.

Nero isn't the cause of the problem.

I don't know what software your using to re-encode your films, but I would suggest you use FlaskMPEG. This is an excellent application because it allows you to keep the aspect ratio (including the letterbox). You need to make sure your settings are set to the correct frame rate for your TV set (29.97fps for NTSC and 25fps for PAL). Make sure you don't crop your screen when ripping. The screen resolution should be on the 355x288 (I've fogotten the exact figure... sorry, but you'll see it on the settings tab).

If you need any further help, let me know.
