Bardon Mill against the world (eh LT)

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Unofficial Newcastle United Football Club BBS : One Thread

From The 'Hexham Courant' (and you wonder why the A69 is so crazy)

Bardon Mill's Stuart Oliver pulled out all the stops in Jarama, Spain, at the weekend to finish in third position in the FIA European Racetruck championship. The Martin Oliver Haulage boss, who took part in the European championships last year for the first time and finished in seventh place, this time took one third place and three fourth places.

Katharine Oliver said: "We were absolutely delighted as we never expected to finish in such a high position.

"It was also a brilliant year for Stuart's main sponsor MAN as not only did they take the top three positions in Racetruck with Lutz Bernau of Germany, first; Egon Allgauer of Austria, second; and Stuart, third they also took the top three positions in Superacetruck with Fritz Kreutzpointner of Germany, first, Markus Bosiger of Switzerland, second; and Antonio Albacete of Spain, third.

"Therefore the celebrations for MAN started before the official dinner and prizegiving and carried on long after!"

Stuart is racing at Le Mans this weekend as the second leg of the Anglo French challenge is being held there, and the following weekend there is a round of the British Championship at Pembrey in South Wales.

Grass Roots of the game. The below makes you remember that football is not all Veron, Zola & Giggs or even 90 minutes on a saturday afternoon watching millionaires......top stuff alive and well.

Felling Greyhound 4 Corbridge United 1 FELLING Greyhound completed a league double over Corbridge by the same 4-1 scoreline as on the opening day of the season, but Corbridge officials said after the game that the scoreline did flatter the Tynesiders.

Greyhound led 2-0 at half-time in the Tyneside Amateur League game with Tiffin unlucky for United when he saw his shot hit the bar. In the second half it was a case of two penalties with Felling keeper Liddle saving an effort from Corbridge's Travis while Felling scored with the spot kick.

Corbridge blooded another youngster in this game and it was Mark Stobbart who pulled a goal back before Felling made the game safe, keeper Liddle won his side's man of the match for some good saves and Neil Tiffin picked up the Corbridge award for his midfield display.

On the corresponding Saturday 50 years ago, the Corbridge side Rangers ran out 8-4 winners against Allendale in the old Hexham and District league (that seems to make no sense but anyway). Only two players were on the score sheet, John Younger with a double hat-trick with the other two goals coming from Dougie Lowes (<- I knew this bloke) both incidentally living in Corbridge today.

l Two of the District's sides crashed out of the Minor Cup at the first hurdle: Hexhamshire who did well to win at Lindisfarne the previous week lost to Belford of the Sportsworld North Northumberland league 6-2, while Spittal Rovers A from the same league won 3-1 at Bellingham.

Aye heedz, top pub indeed.

If there's one thing you can say for Bardon Mill it's they know how to rev heavy machinery !! ;O))

Cheers for the attempt to make me homesick TM. In truth I've spent so little time in the area these past 20 years I can't say I know that many faces anymore. And now me Mam informs that she's moving across the border ... into Co.Durham would you believe. Some village I can't say I've ever heard of, but seemingly that's where I'll be spending Christmas this year. Lucky ol' me

Mark Stobbart ?
I think I was taught by his father at the Sele school. Or was it his grandfather - I'm not getting any younger.

LT, I never realised you were (orig.) from Bardon Mill, I'm from the giant metropolis of Haltwhistle (I'm in Hong Kong presently!), just west of Bardon Mill - which year did you leave Bardon Mill?

Bud - I'm not from BM originally. In fact I'm not really 'from' there now either, though me mam and little brother are (except she's about to move into Co.Durham). I've actually spent most of the past decade or two in London and Sydney areas - you know the score, go where the work is eh ? But the family did live for a while close to Haltwhistle - between Greenhead & Gilsland. Hope you're not ower fond of the area cos I hated it !! I could never wait to get into the toon and to civilisation when I was a lad ... ;O))

So which part of Haltwhistle you from ?

LT, I didn't know there was more than one part, lol - how about central, behind the library and the bowling green or, how about within 10 mins. walk of all 12 pubs / clubs?

Right now I'm from Wanchai in Hong Kong, I'm often in East Coast, Singapore and I've still got that other (empty) house in North Ryde, Sydney, Oh and another one in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Good ol' West Tyne, "never forget ya roots", as me fatha used top say!
