Quinn wants to stay

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Unofficial Newcastle United Football Club BBS : One Thread

Despite reports that a number of first division sides are after him, Wayne Quinn has said that he is prepared to stay and fight for his place at left back. He says that he knew he wasn't guaranteed a starting place every week but that's prepared to fight for his place. This is a bit sad, actually, because Robbie Elliott, Olivier Bernard and possibly even Hughesie are better in that position so he'll hardly ever get a game. You'd think he'd cut his losses and go.

certain comments about Mr Johnson going somewhere and no getting first team footy would make him a money grabber if that's what "fighting for my place is"...

Nothing wrong with staying to fight for your place, so long as you do actually fight for it. We expect players to stick to the contracts they sign (like Rob Lee) and the flip side of that is we've got te accept that sometimes players will exercise their right to stay. Harsh to say that it's all about money because a. we don't (or I don't anyway) know what he's on or what he'd be offered to leave, and b. it's not beyond the realms of possibility that he could play in our first team this season. He certainly hasn't looked the part so far, but nor has Elliot for the most part & Bernard is largely untested. Hardly unreasonable for the lad to want to hang around.

A report on YahooSport suggests that Wolves have actually failed in a bid for Quinn, viz:

According to sources at Wolves the First division outfit have failed with a reported £1 million bid for Magpies full-back Wayne Quinn. Wolves boss Dave Jones refused to make any comment earlier this week when asked about a planned move for the defender. But now it appears he has made a solid bid for the player.

Quinn himself has insisted he is not quitting St James' Park, despite appearing to be down the left-back pecking order at Newcastle.

As well as Wolves it is thought a number of other clubs are interested in the former Sheffield United man. Several First Division scouts were in the stands as Quinn put in a solid performance on his comeback from injury for Newcastle's reserves against Leeds on Monday. However, the 24-year-old Cornishman says: "I feel I've still got a lot to offer Newcastle. Robbie Elliott's and Olivier Bernard's form doesn't mean I won't fight for my place. I've only just come back from injury, so I wouldn't expect to walk straight back into the team, and I joined Newcastle knowing I would not be guaranteed first- team football.

It's nice to know other clubs might be keeping an eye on me but I want to be part of Newcastle's future success."

Competition for places. Gotta be good...

Another site reckons the bid was £500k, but that Quinn himself turned down the move.
