In his wiritings his sickly heroines- and heros- were not uncommon to romantic, melancholic literature of the times but the imagery has often been referred to this this illness by many critics. HE tries not to connect the dots, so it might be safe in those pre-freudian days, to assume he did not consciously mean to write about deeply painful trauma.
