Quick Poll: Best striker in Britain

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Unofficial Newcastle United Football Club BBS : One Thread

I'm going to go for Thierry Henry. He's not as prolific as JFH but his movement is just gorgeous and his pace is unbelievable. You lot?

Arthur Scargill - his movement ain't gorgeous but he's alway there or there abouts :-)

Nah - he'd just go stroppy, and blame someone else when he didn't score. Ooh, who does that sound like?

Micheal Owen .Always rises to the occasion.Ie Fa cup Fianl,England world cup games,Uefa cup final. Also scores loads against you!

Shearer

Kev, one of the best finishers has to be one Stan Varga (how does it go: he cleans up attackers like a creamy pint of lager?)

has to be JFH at the moment but Owen is still only 21 and worringly shouldn't peak for a few more years, compare with say someone like Peter Beardsley who didn't join us in the old second division till he was nearly 23

I'm going for J.F. Hasselbaink with Henry right behind. Henry may be one of the best players in the EPL, but Hasselbaink is the best striker. He always scores even though he plays in a shite team like he did in Spain.

YMO. Might have said TH if he hadn't missed that open goal on Saturday.

Hmm - Britain?? Maybe Henrik Larsson could squeeze in there, but to be honest, I'd fancy my chances against half of those Scottish defences ;-)

Talking of that missed goal, one of the Sunday papers had a headline "Haway Henry"..I wonder whether the headline writer mistook the strip for Sunderland's or whether Henry has Makem connections that we don't know about. Or maybe it was a bit of lateral thinking - Henry missed as well as any CH and Varga scored as well as any CF?

It wasn't the NotW was it? Haway instead of Hooray. Makes me think they're taking the p!$$. Finsihing like a Makem ;-)

Trevor Benjamin is my personal favourite! ;o{)

Got to be JFH - top scorer in England when he was at Leeds, went to Spain and was top scorer despite playing for a relegated side (outscored the likes of Raul, Morientes, Kluivert etc), came back & was top scorer last season. I think he's top scorer this season so far. Definite pattern developing there, as an out and out goalscorer he's hard to beat. Henry and Owen have more pace & arguably more to their all around games, but for goals alone Hasselbaink is the man.

Kitson

For me it has to be YMO as he can perform at both club and international level and has the temperament for the big occasion.

Owen and Hasslebaink and I think that they are much better than the rest. Henry is a good player but I think he is too greedy. There have been a number of times when he has had a shot (and missed) when other players are in a far better position. This drives my Arsenal friend mad. Could you imagine either Owen or Hasslebaink missing that chance on Saturday?

Henry, by a street

Anyone see Henry's performance in the CL game last night: Jesus, just mint.

-- Anonymous, October 17, 2001

Not the best, but still, IMHO, underrated: Robbie Fowler.

-- Anonymous, October 17, 2001

hmm, Larsson does it for me as a footballer, genuinely terrific player. JFH cos he just does it but he does seem to need chances but then again he creates his own. I'm sure I can think of someone better though, more contraversial and that!

OGS....cos ....."who put the ball in the Germans net...Ole Ole who put the ball in the German's net...Ole Gunnar Solskjaer"...and he's not a bad defender either...especially partial to catching a runaway Geordie screaming towards the net:-)

dougal, the Varga song is "Varga Varga Varga Varga..." to that born slippy tune from Trainspotting. Rarely sung cos a) he's crap b) he never plays cos Reidy thinks he's crap c) he's yours for a million quid.

The best striker in the country should be strong, two-footed, hold the ball up well, not scared of shooting and good in the air.

Answer = SKP.

Hmmmm... tough one. Henry is certainly a canny player. On Sunday we will be up against 2 of the very best.... Edward Sherringham and Leslie Ferdinand. I reckon I'd have to go with YMO as the best though.

Just kidding Jonno (if you're lurking there - he missed ANOTHER sitter yesterday v. Notlob!)
