Warren Barton

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Unofficial Newcastle United Football Club BBS : One Thread

Does anyone know exactly why he wasn't in the squad at the weekend? Teamsquak are reporting that he is upset as he wasn't informed until the last minute. When did he go from being one of BR's 'blue chip' boys to persona non grata. Seems a bit harsh.

Steve Bruce has also said he knows nothing about a transfer to Palace for him.

Although I'm of the view, like many of you, that time marches on and Lee and Warren should leave, I would not like to think they were being treated harshly by the club. I feel quite sorry for them both, especially Warren who has had 2 managers say they don't want him in public.

Teamsquak also says that Dunn has no interest in joining us.

Lynda, there was a feature in one of the Saturday papers quoting Bobby as saying he just gave Warren the weekend off but that he had been too busy to tell him on Thursday.... not the best man- management, particularly since Griff was injured and Wozz would expect to be first choice after Griff?

Sorry Dougal, but I don't buy that hog-wash about Barton needing the weekend off. Granted, he played on Tuesday against Barnsley, but other than that, he hasn't played for some time (internationals and post-Wham injury). The assumption is that he needed a rest for physical reasons. I can't see that. The only credulity I can give to it is if he's deein; he's heed in, due to all the speculation/meetings about a pending transfer. No matter how YBR might try to wrap it up, it looks to me like he's on his way out.

PS. I wasn't suggesting you were the originator of the hog-wash.

Rob Lee says Bobby wasn't around on Thursday, which is why he handed in his transfer request on Friday. That being so, that's why Barton wan't told till the last minute (the last minute being Friday of course) Then again Bobby is the boss and Barton isn't. Simple as that.

Hughes looked very comfortable at Right Back. His best position?

-- Anonymous, October 15, 2001

DSS, I thought Aaron was a bit nervous to start with but, then, he hasn't played RB for club or country for about 18 months. After the first ten minutes, he seemed to get into it really well. Neither Barton or Griff have looked that convincing this season so it's good to have Hughes as an option. I'm biased but I think he deserves a modicum of praise for having, without complaint, played in four separate positions for us since the start of the InterToto and not really having let us down in any of them (although he was starting to look tired at CH). Screach - I agree.

I wonder if this was the first mention to Barton that he wouldn't be an automatic first choice? Does seem a bit harsh if that's the case, so I could understand him being a bit annoyed. Still, even he must realize his days are/were numbered as an automatic starter.

Screach - I think you're right. YBR has never knowingly rested anyone who needed a rest let alone someone who has just had about three weeks off (he didn't play against Liverpool or Leicester). Ciara - I think not being told at all until the official site has published the squad sheet is probably is probably a fair old p*sser.

Maybe he knew Rob Lee would lead the clapping at Bolton and didn't want Barton trying to muscle in on it

What I'd like to know is what could be more important for a Club Manager than personally telling a senior player he was going to be dropped/rested?
This is the sort of insensitive cr@p that RG was roundly, and deservedly, criticised for.

-- Anonymous, October 15, 2001

Clarky, I think you're right: YBR has, periodically, had lapses in manmanagement such as telling the World about his views of Nobby, slagging off individuals (eg. Dabs after our latest thrashing at Anfield) and this Wozza thing. If it's any consolation, I think it is just thoughtlessness, not malice, as it seemed to be with Gullit.

Yeah okay, but I'm not sure whether Barton deserves to be taken aside and told he's not in the side any more than Acuna, say, or Shola or Bernard.

Very few of us view Barton as an automatic first choice player, if he does he needs to wake up. None of them, and that means Shearer, Lee, Speed, Barton et al should think they are automatic first picks. They may well be, and may well deserve to be (in some peoples eyes) but I really doubt Sir Alex goes around apolgising/explaining to the ten internationals who don't get picked for each game why he is doing what he is doing.

Does Barton explain after every game why he didn't tackle players ?

makes you wonder if this so called 'clique' did exist

Is Bobby trying to get rid of something?

-- Anonymous, October 15, 2001

Robert and Bellamy are automatic choices to my mind. Nobody else for the left and nobody else with pace.

-- Anonymous, October 15, 2001

MacB, the difference is intent: Wozza doesn't go out to have a bad game and probably couldn't explain why he lost a tackle anymore than Bellamy can explain a missed sitter or Shay can explain a spilt ball. Bobby, on the other hand, presumably gives some thought to his team picks and has a rationale, however obscure it may seem to us, for his selection. Besides which, it's just basic good manners.

Although as recently as May, Bobby was calling a fan who said we should get rid of the blue chip brigade a "jerk".

-- Anonymous, October 15, 2001

Macbeth - it is what is known as good man management. It's about treating people with respect, and part of getting the best out of them. That's all.

-- Anonymous, October 15, 2001

Exactly, Clarky.

-- Anonymous, October 15, 2001

I know it's good man management, and you would have thought Bobby would have learned after not picking Keegan for England ? BUT, I am pretty sure that Sir Alex with 21 full internationals in his squad doesn't spend all day Tuesday/Friday explaining to ten disappointed wee flowers that they aren't in the team for tomorrow.

Is he to explain to Bernard why he was dropped, or Harper, or Distin all playing as defenders in a team not conceding ?? And most ludicrously does he go and explain to Elena every week that he's crap and not picking him ?

-- Anonymous, October 16, 2001

tend to agree MacB. All players should be treated the same, and by doing so it's a lot more motivational to the younger players and those outside the self-appointed inner sanctum.

-- Anonymous, October 16, 2001

MacB, there's a difference between Man Utd with their 21 internationals (some of whom will just be delighted to get a game, some of whom won't mind missing out on a trip to the SOL if it means they play in the CL) and us with our hotchpotch and where Barton, in the absence of any other fit right backs, would expect a place on the bench.

-- Anonymous, October 16, 2001

Plus, Harper, Distin, etc already know where they stand. Barton has been an automatic choice even when all sense(at least to us) dictates otherwise. He was also named several times by Bobby as one of his 'Blue chip brigade'. So, in this case, yes he did deserve some explanation or warning that the times are a-changin. Of course, none of us are inside, so who knows if Bobby may have made some mentions to Barton earlier that we aren't hearing about.

-- Anonymous, October 16, 2001

...... yes - any player being dropped deserves to have the reasons explained to him individually. This should take no more than 5 minutes, and very few things are more important. A Manager should spend his time managing his assets - that is his job.

...... and, no - a player not routinely in the team would not expect the reason to be explained to him every week. However, I would expect him to be spoken to individually by the Manager from time to time to encourage him, explain what it is he needs to do to come into consideration again, and to give him feedback on his progress against the identified criteria.

rotfl!! Have you seen this week's Ormondroyd, MacBeth? Good bit towards the end of Arsenal's back 4 cooling their heels in the old folks home. Perhaps we should have a Geordie version? ;-)
