Management Comparison

Here is that table I periodically post showing how each manager has done in the league each season. I simply take the averages and multiply them by 38 so that they can be compared directly however many or few games each manager had charge of. The final column shows the points gained or lost from the immediate predecessor. Bobby is definitely heading in the right direction:

Manager Season AvgG/F AvgG/A AvgPts G/F G/A G/Dif Pts Progress
Keegan 1993-94 1.95 0.98 1.83 74 37 37 70 n/a
Keegan 1994-95 1.6 1.12 1.71 61 43 18 65 -5
Keegan 1995-96 1.74 0.97 2.05 66 37 29 78 13
Keegan 1996-97 1.81 1.05 1.76 69 40 29 67 -11
Dalglish 1996-97 2.06 1 1.88 78 38 40 71 4
Dalglish 1997-98 0.92 1.16 1.16 35 44 -9 44 -27
Dalglish 1998-99 0.5 0.5 1 19 19 0 38 -6
Gullit 1998-99 1.31 1.4 1.26 50 53 -3 48 10
Gullit 1999-00 1.4 2.6 0.2 53 99 -46 8 -40
Robson 1999-00 1.72 1.13 1.59 65 43 23 61 53
Robson 2000-01 1.16 1.32 1.34 44 50 -6 51 -10
Robson 2001-02 1.88 1.38 1.75 71 52 19 67 16

53 progress points, that's quite a total, and -40 for Gullit awful.

That was from 5 games though Paul, I only left it in because there would have been complaints otherwise. I excluded the caretaker manager games and could equally have left out Kenny's 2 games at the start of 1998-99. The real change was that Robson was up 13 on Gullit's season.

It's looking at the average points, G/F and G/A for each manager each season and multiplying the results by 38. this means that you can see how well Keegan would have done over the whole season in 1996-97 if he hadn't left in January, and likewise how we would have done had Dalglish managed us for the whole of that season. It also means that you can make direct comparisons with 19993-94 and 1994-95 when there were 2 extra teams in the league. Not perfect but better than a slap in the belly with a wet fish.

Softie - can you do a comparison of BR results with Wadsworth and without him on a toon vs team(venue) basis?

softie, can you compile goals per game by striker against top six teams, bottom six and mid table versus the average for the entire club.

if that makes any sense....

Softie, you are like God Almighty: Omniscient, omnipresent and omnipotent ;)

George, I was working on that but got fouled up by the 22 teams in 1993-95 and by the fact that you lose a chance to do well when we are in the top six (unless you score some own goals!).

The best I could come up with was a sort of sliding scale where you take NUFC out and have top 6, middle 7 and bottom 6 but it was a total pain in the arse. I might try it again but am currently working on getting all the contract info on to work out the cost of each team selection and see how that corresponds with results.
