No one wants a passworded forum and no one will go

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Unk's Wild Wild West : One Thread

Let's face facts. A passworded forum will die the death of a dog. No one here is about to "mail" you for a password. Screww that not gonna give out my email address or info. Not gonna happen.

Like most forums that have been spammed you run and hide, and, of course, FAIL.

No need to run anywhere or to hide. Just plodding along will be good enough. One of these days I'll start a thread on some topic more interesting than stupidity... if nobody else does first.

-- Miserable SOB (misery@misery.com), October 13, 2001.

If the thread on a passworded forum wasn't done by a troll, I'd like the password [just so I don't miss something], but I'd much rather stay here. For Pete's sake...what have we got here besides a troll with baggage on how some of us live our lives? This baggage can't be debated, so it just sits there and consumes the troll. It's not MY problem, and I'm not concerned about it. I'm not even concerned about the spamming.

It's real, Antia, and this place looked like an 8th grade food fight before Unk cleaned it up last night. I wouldn't have bothered.

-- (thelittle@yellow.duck), October 13, 2001.

I saw it before he cleaned it up. I hope it wasn't an awful task for Unk. Sometimes, IMO, the spam that comes is a message to us that life has more to offer than simply this forum. Each day is a new one and a spammer must spend an inordinate amount of time engaging in the foolishness of last night. I guess I see it as a disgruntled poster with perhaps a little too much of the "sauce" in his/her system to care to post anything beyond the baggage held.

-- Anita (Anita_S3@hotmail.com), October 13, 2001.

Folks; this is supposed to be a community. Most of this TML stuff is rudimentary. You can fix it without Unk. I have been doing it for years. I must admit that Cherri's use of em [shall we call her Aunti EM] rather than Italics was new "for this board". The blackout is just changing the background to the same color as the text. You can correct it without Unk with a bod command.

I wasn't here last night so I have no idea what happened. But come on, for most things you can help the moderater. :) Setting buttons is minor. There are some things that only the moderater can fix; but that is a secret.

Best Wishes,,,,

"I wasn't here last night so I have no idea what happened."

Yeah well this wasn't kiddie html stuff. That bitch Ladylogic figured out how to plant some kind of script in the threads that triggered a crash in any computer that opened it. At least I know it worked on mine, several times in a row. Fortunately, no damage was done, but an improper shutdown can damage files.

-- (ladylogic guilty @ of. intentional malicious destruction), October 13, 2001.

I doubt that is HTML or any of the other TML's. Then, being a person who does graphics analysis, I operate from a G4. Don't normally encounter these problems. I have had sites download a dot Gif before, but my system tells me and dispenses with it.

Without a better description, I couldn't comment.

Best Wishes,,,,

I read all the threads last evening and NONE of them crashed my PC.

-- Anita (Anita_S3@hotmail.com), October 13, 2001.

In addition, there have always been one or two regular posters who disagree based on the baggage they've carried all their lives. I don't think Laura should be blamed for this one. The reasons range from being 2 lbs. overweight to not honoring THEIR racist views, to political differences. Since there's no way for these few to engage in reasonable debate regarding differences that come from their OWN baggage, they engage in insults, spams, etc. Certainly, Laura encountered some of these folks either via her behavior in chatrooms or various boards. The hatred runs so deep that it could very well be that these people [or even one person] wanted everyone to think Laura did this. Their goal would be accomplished if she stopped posting, kindof like the goal was accomplished when 'sumer stopped posting.

Lady Logic was having another one of her psychotic episodes, these things usually pass quickly. She was obviously stressed out by the threats of terrorism, then she became even more distressed when she came back to this forum. There was a lot of bickering and hostility going on here, and she couldn't handle it. She wanted to take control of reality and shut out anything which made her uncomfortable. That was when she started jamming up all the threads with discussions that she didn't like. Finally, her episode climaxed in a fit of spamming, including one very bizarre thread with hundreds of buttons in it.

-- cyber freud (just @ another. episode), October 13, 2001.

I haven't run anywhere. This place is still open for bidness. What's your point?

PS, LOTS of folks have asked for the password.

-- Uncle Deedah (unkeed@yahoo.com), October 13, 2001.

NOT, then don't. No one is forcing you to send Unk an email. Unk took the time out to make a place for those of us who are quite sick of the psychotic behavior of those who want to ruin the board for everyone - misery loves company of course. Quite frankly, this is the only alternative other than him having to sit here 24/7 and babysit the forum. So hey, I will check out the new board and may migrate over to it when this place goes haywire. You know, the psychos will either get tired and move on, or perhaps they will be commited and locked up when they finally do venture outside. heh

And Z, you can't necessarily fix a thread when the 'post reply' button has been removed.

-- (Catherine__Linton@hotmail.com), October 13, 2001.

On second thought, Z, I'd really like to see an example of your know- it-all html. Can you please fix a thread for us?

-- (Catherine__Linton@hotmail.com), October 13, 2001.

I, for one, won't be one of the folks asking for a password. There is nothing more cowardly than retreating into a redoubt. It is an admission that your ideas don't carry the power required for examination in the light of day. Read TB2k. If that is the direction that you choose; so be it; just don't expect any respect or participation from this quarter.

Yes Catherine:

I will show you how to do it.

And that's fine Z.

I am merely giving folks an option, nice guy that I am.

-- Uncle Deedah (unkeed@yahoo.com), October 13, 2001.

retreating into a redoubt...hmm....

Z, is that what you did when you said you were going to pooles and would never return and post here again? Just wondered.

-- (Catherine__Linton@hotmail.com), October 13, 2001.

Now back to normal. You did want an example. :)))

I am not going to do anything that screws-up the board and makes work for Unk.

I just sent Unk my request for a password. This place looks like ground zero sometimes... Count me in Deedah, a passworded forum is needed IMO...

Whinin' to be let in...

*I* want to see your ability to fix a thread, as well, Z.

-- your older sister (Anita_S3@hotmail.com), October 13, 2001.

By-the-by Catherine:

You should investigate the meaning of the word redoubt. :)))

Hey, I have to leave in two weeks, if this bio-warfare thing doesn't drop on me. Then that may be better than where I am supposed to be.

Best Wishes,,,,

-- Z1X4Y7 (Z1X4Y7@aol.com), October 13, 2001.

Anita:

Well, I am clean up and a lot of other names. My major job has been cleaning up dropped tabs from Cherri. I gave you one example. You wouldn't notice since you don't do this. You only drop anchor tags which are cleaned up by the e-mail address.

You might look at the blacked out thread which I changed to lime background with purple writing. My impish nature. the hex's would be #00FF00 for bg and #800080 for text. Have fun. Look in Source view under clean up

Best Wishes,,,

By-the-way-Anita:

It is this thread:

Annoying Colors

Yeah, it gets to me too. :)))

Cin:

You aren't missing a thing. Don't update. The colors are annoying. :))

Z1X4Y7:

No problem Unk. I have this whole pile of stuff on central Asia to digest. It should come on Monday. Then I would be gone anyway.

So have a good one.

Catherine, I hear you.

Z, maybe you didn't see the threads that were made totally unusable because someone put in some script which (purposely or not) makes it so the reply button doesn't come up. Those threads were on the forum last night but seem to be gone now, I guess Unk has deleted them.

This shows an example of the script used:

http://hv.greenspun.com/bboard/q-and-a-fetch-msg.tcl?msg_id=006g6j

It's Unk's own thread, and he wrecked it himself so no one else would get there first!

I challenge you (or anyone without moderator privileges) to repair Unk's thread. I would love to inspect how you do it.

Please let me know if you didn't see this challenge. ;^)
