Sporting Life say he is resting comfortably in hospital. He's awake and talking to people. He's not expected to make the trip to Ukraine for their Champs League match. O'Leary said Houllier had joked before the match that being a manager was bad for your health.

ITV report he has not had a heart attack, but will need cardiac surgery. He will be away from his duties for some time.I wish him a speedy recovery

Seconded. I thought immediatly of the late great Jock Stein when I heard. A minor afterthought but Phil Thompson temporarily in charge with F****r as skipper could be, erm, interesting.

What could be wrong with somebody's heart that needs surgery, but has nowt to do with a heart attack, or have I missed something (again) ?

I'm assuming he has been lucky enough to have had an early warning that he needed by-pass surgery, PB, without actually experiencing a damaging heart attack. If so, he has been very fortunate.

News reports today suggest that the type of op he had (sorry, don't know the technical term) was typical of a "blockage". As Clarky said, lucky if they've caught it in time before it caused any major damage. It goes to show how the public's awareness of heart problems alongside the huge advances in medical science can hopefully prevent premature heart-attack. I only wish that had been the case when my Dad suffered. Hopefully we will all have a better chance in future.Bon Chance Gerrard - get well bientot.
