Guam Jolted by Earthquake
HAGATNA, Guam (AP) - An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 7 jolted the island Saturday, knocking out electricity and rattling hotels and bridges.
There were no reports of serious injuries.
The early morning quake was centered 45 miles southeast of the 212-square-mile island, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (news - web sites) in Colorado.
``You could feel the ground moving like a wave,'' said police Officer Rudy Ignacio.
``It woke us up in a bad way,'' added Sgt. Herman Garrido.
Damage was reported at some hotels in the tourism center of Tumon Bay and there were broken water pipelines throughout the island.
Fire Department Capt. Andy Arceo said the agency had received no immediate reports of structural fires or serious damage but engineers were assessing large buildings.
Authorities were checking sites where people reported smoke to see if it was earthquake-related.
Guam is a U.S. territory 3,700 miles west of Hawaii.
