Missing python reportedly eats dog

A 30-pound pit bull was killed and swallowed whole by a 200-pound Burmese python early Friday morning at a residence on East 22nd Street, according to Merced Police.

According to Sgt. Andre Matthews, Merced Police responded to a call at 1:23 a.m. from Jerry Brown of 123 E. 22nd St. He reported both his python and dog missing.

After a 25-minute search, Brown and Officer Rudy Estrada found the python under the dwelling. It was determined that the pit bull had been eaten by the snake.

"The snake had the dog for dinner," Matthews said. "It's hard to believe the pit bull didn't rip the snake to pieces. But those snakes just get hold and keep squeezing until they stop kicking."

The python was captured by its owner and returned to its pen.

Animal control officials are investigating the incident to determine if the python is considered a wild animal and in violation of city municipal code, Matthews said.

The officer said Brown did the right thing by notifying police that the snake had escaped. Such notification is required by law.
