Five earthquakes shake Greece

SALONICA, Greece, Oct 8 (AFP) - Five earthquakes measuring between 3.2 and 4.8 on the open-ended Richter scale shook northern Greece and the island of Rhodes in the Aegean Sea on Monday, earthquake monitoring authorities said.

Authorities said there had been no victims or material damage in any of the quakes.

The strongest quake shook the region around Rhodes off the Turkish coast, but it, like the four quakes near Salonica, caused no damage or injuries, authorities said.

The quakes near Salonica had caused panic and schools were evacuated as a precautionary measure.

The epicenters were located about 15 kilometers (nine miles) northeast of Salonica, the geophysics laboratory at Salonica University said.

A seismologist from the laboratory, Georges Leventakis, said it was the first time a geological fault located in the area had caused such severe earthquakes.
