I have downloaded a multimedia which has an extension of .mpg i.e. filename.mpg However, I suspect this file is just simply renamed from .dat to .mpg How can I determine whether it is truly/originally a .dat or .mpg file?

simply open up virtual dub and load the mpg file. If virtual dub does not complain about the file, then it's a true mpg.
