The US and UK attacked 30 targets across Afghanistan on the first day of air strikes aimed to destroy the Taleban's air defences and weaken Osama Bin Laden's al-Qaida organisation. Targets included al-Qaida training camps, airfields, anti-aircaft batteries, and Taleban command centres. According to the Ministry of Defence, three targets were close to Kabul, four near other urban centres, and 23 in remote rural locations.
The US and Britain launched airstrikes against Afghanistan from battleships and
submarines in the Gulf, the Indian Ocean island of Diego Garcia, and by B2
long-range stealth bombers flying from the US and refuelling in mid-air.
