From the October 6 PTOC event at SMP:

Red course 8 to 9 and 10 to 11 look like interesting route choice legs.

I took a few photos at the event.

This was a day to avoid trails & test contour line reading skills. Proceeded up the nose, crossed the 2 trails and up to the N/S ridge line looking for the "saddle". Saddle was vague & assumed I was pretty much on thge red line to #11. Going downhill with a compass bearing for the marker. The 1st catching feature could be stream then trail, or stream at trail, or trail then stream. I got to the trail 1st. Continued to the 2nd trail and left on trail to control. The collecting features along the way made it pretty easy. Woods were quite runnable, too.

I arrived at #8 just as two other runners were leaving. They both headed for the small road, south of the control. I stopped, looked at my map, and decided that I did not want to climb. So I stayed high and contoured around to the east, past the pond. The woods were quite nice, plus there are some un-mapped trails in that area that made for easy moving. Once I got to the open area, however, I was pulled slightly off course. I headed too far east (near the north line on the map). I saw a reentrant in front of me, but it was running the wrong direction. I figured out where I was, and headed back into #9.
