First the revenge theme against a dishonor committed by a person of higher status against the murderer. Humiliating and tricking the victim is a key ingredient. The setting is European, set in some indeterminate past, so as not to get too close to depicting Poe's own enemies. Imprisoning the victim is a key ingredient and getting the victim to be an instrument of his own doom so as to reveal the cleverness as well as the full horror. They have themselves to blame according to the murderer. And above all the mask and jester theme, who is playing the joke on who now reversal. You might note that Hopfrog is a reversal of several of Poe's stories that seem to make symbolic cameo references throughout. In this case the jester is the killer not the victim. the use of wine, some of which is spilled on the king or used as a lure for Fortunato. The list goes on and I am sorry this answer is late.
