Taliban Envoy Says Bin Laden Alive After Attacks

October 07, 2001 02:40 PM ET

ISLAMABAD (Reuters) - The world's most wanted man, Osama bin Laden, and his protector, the leader of Afghanistan's ruling Taliban, Mullah Mohammad Omar, survived the first wave of U.S. attacks, the Taliban ambassador to Pakistan told reporters Sunday.

Asked if bin Laden and Mullah Omar were still alive after the strikes on cities across Afghanistan, Ambassador Mullah Abdul Salam Zaeef said: "Thanks be to God."

The attacks were a sign of U.S. arrogance and expansionism, Zaeef said, condemning the strikes as terrorist acts.
