Steve Caldwell on loan to Blackpool???

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Unofficial Newcastle United Football Club BBS : One Thread

Only a rumour from TOTT, but has anyone else heard this? In a way, going on loan can be a good thing in terms of developing a player but surely we should be using Steve for the Worthington etc? I hope this isn't true.

Doesn't everybody from round here go to Blackpool this time of year?

I don't think he's really good enough for the PL IMHO. He is slower than any of our other centre backs and gave away two blatantly bad penalties last season with his tackling. He does like to get stuck in however, but more than thay is needed. Going on loan is the perfect solution to develop his career further.

I agree Paul. He's had some canny games but he's not the finished article by any means. Sending him out on loan still retains his long-term registration with NUFC while giving him (arguably) a higher level of competition than available with the Resorves. Six months or so on loan should identify whether he's good enough or not. If not, get rid and trawl the Nationwide for somebody better (assuming we aren't gonna buy an existing international class player).

According to nufc.com he is off to Blackpool for a month.

From what I've seen of him, he looks on par with O'brien, but has a tougher attitude, bossing the other defenders around him. I would have liked to have seen him and hughes as a central defencive partnership this season.

Rik, you should have seen this tackle that O'Brien put in yesterday. I swear I winced it looked so hard.

Right now Andy O'Brien is a much better player/defender than Steve Caldwell. Different styles mind - O'Brien's biggest asset is his pace, although e is a canny reader of the game.
Steve Caldwell lacks pace, and to make the 'big time' he needs to develop into the commanding 'animal' centre half that we, and the rest of the PL is looking for.
